Return to index of stories... 		New Hampshire Supreme Court Justice John Broderick is asking the legal community to take an active role in supporting judicial independence. Last night, Broderick told the Greater Salem Bar Association that while lawmakers may be well intentioned in their efforts at judicial reform, the resulting legislation could undermine the independence of the court. It was the first time Broderick has spoken in public - since he and Justice James Duggan - faced criticism for speaking in support of Chief Justice David Brock to the judicial conduct committee. Brock was being investigated by the J-C-C, which admonished Brock.

Return to index of stories... 		Taxpayers got to go behind the walls of The New Hampshire State Prison today. The public was given a guided tour which included a look at the prison yard, administrative areas and shops where prisoners make license plates. The state plans to offer similar tours of prisons in Berlin, Goffstown and Laconia.

Return to index of stories... 		A new memorial for Granite State veterans is one - step closer to becoming a reality. More than half of the money needed to build a memorial walkway at the Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen was raised at a gala Wednesday night in Manchester.
The 380 thousand dollars raised will aid in the construction of a historic walkway which will feature 20 granite monuments with information about significant military events in New Hampshire history. Organizers are looking to raise another 280 thousand dollars for the memorial.

Return to index of stories... 		- Stocks turned higher as investors digested some conflicting economic data. The nation's unemployment rate dipped slightly, but at the same time manufacturing companies continued to cut jobs -- suggesting that sector remains in trouble.

Return to index of stories... 		The Dow Jones industrial average ended up 78 points at ten-thousand-990. The Nasdaq was up 39 points to 21-hundred-49, a 101-point loss for the week.And the Standard-and-Poor's 500 index rose nearly five points to 12-hundred-60, down 17 points for the week.

Return to index of stories... 		Here's a look at stocks of interest to New Hampshire investors. Autodesk was up one dollar and five cents. Chubb was down one dollar. Keane Corporation rose ninety-three cents. Teradyne rose one dollar and ninety cents. And Tyco International closed the day down ninety-three cents.

Return to index of stories... 		It's not often that people find themselves being handed cash by a stranger. But that was the situation in Manchester today. Tellers at Saint Mary's Bank passed out five-dollar bills to lunchtime pedestrians to promote a new checking account plan. Passersbys were understandably surprised. One man even tried to give the money back, until he was assured the promotion was legitimate. In total, the bank gave away in excess of 16 hundred dollars.
