State BudgetReturn to index of stories... |
The state budget for the next two years is nearly complete, but lawmakers have still not come up with a plan that will fully fund it. A conference committee of the House and Senate is at work on the tax revenue plan to fill a projected deficit of about $200 million. Among the more controversial sections of the bill are a increasing both the business enterprise tax and business profits tax. This afternoon, the House members of the committee stopped the clock on the proceedings by signing an incomplete report before the three o'clock deadline. The House Democratic members refused to sign and were removed from the committee. |

In a move to increase public confidence in the state's judiciary, a committee of New Hampshire legislators today recommended creating a disciplinary panel which would be separate from the state Supreme court. The current system of handling discpilinary issues has been criticized as having too much influence from judges. Under the new plan, the independent disciplinary panel would assess all complaint for probable cause before making them public. The proposal face a vote before the full House and Senate next week. |
