Retiring UNH President Dr. Joan Leitzel Friday received the University's highest award: the Pettee Medal. Leitzel was recognized for the contributions she made during her six years as UNH President. Among her accomplishments, the launch of an ambitious 100-million-dollar fund-raising program and the continued renovation of the UNH campus. The award was established in 1940 to recognize individuals who exhibit the devotion to service reflected in the life of the late Dean Pettee, who served as a professor and dean at UNH for 62 years until his death in 1938. |

The U-N-H Presidency has capped Joan Leitzel's lengthy educational career, which has taken her across the United States. Tonight, we revisit a conversation I had with Doctor Leitzel last fall. It was soon after she announced her retirement. We talked about her life, her work, and what brought her to New Hampshire. |

During her tenure Dr. Leitzel has taken an active role in campus life. The following videotape chronicling her activities was part of the Pettee Medal celebration we told you about earlier. It was produced by Stuart Williams of UNH Video Services. |

Dr. Leitzel has not said where her career will next lead her. Her successor has been named. California's Claremont Graduate School provost and vice president for academic affairs Ann Weaver Hart will become the 18th president of UNH. |
