Next on New Hampshire Outlook.
remember that old addage.if you love something set it free? Well that's exactly what some book lovers are doing.
It's almost summer and we've got the hot picks for your kids summer reading.
script iconHello
Return to index of stories...
Hello. I'm Allison McNair. Welcome to NH Outlook.
script iconIntro BookCrossing
Return to index of stories...
Have you come across a book in an odd place lately, like on a park bench or at a restaurant? Chances are it was placed there by a member of BookCrossing-dot-com, a program which releases books into the wild and then tracks their progress. Producer Tai Freligh has more on this new phenomenon.

NATS UP- Scrolling through list of releases nats "somebody released Wuthering Heights, that's so cool!"
TRACK
Aisling D'art is talking about a program that has books traveling all across the country.
SOT Tape 1
I looked this up online, bookcrossing.com, and I saw that it was something very consistent with other projects I've worked on, postcards-x, freewords.com, so many of these new projects where we are connecting through the internet but making the arts and humanities in general more available to people in settings where they might not be expecting it and I think that's very exciting.
TRACK
D'art is one of many people who heard about BookCrossing.com through word of mouth. She is an avid reader and loves books.
SOT Tape 1
To me books are a real escape, an education, another world to wander into, books are just so much for me and they are relaxing. There are just so many things you can get from books that you can't get anywhere else.
TRACK
BookCrossing was started last year by Ron Hornbaker, a Missouri man who also runs a software company. *use photo of Ron with BC signpost here* The idea is to send your old books out into the world instead of letting them gather dust at home. You track their journey online.
SOT Tape 1
Of course you go to bookcrossing.com and you register and that's free. And then you start going through the books you have on your book shelf and you select something that you would like to release. Hopefully it's a book that you really enjoyed that you would enjoy sharing with someone else and you're intrigued that you might be sharing this with a stranger. Somebody totally unknown may be picking this up.
NATS UP HERE- 23:56 Holding book and looking at it then sets down and begins typing on keyboard and talking about registering it online.
NATS UP HERE- 24:07 Shot of computer screen while she types book name and author and picks category- registers book- screen pops up with ID number
SOT Tape 1
And then you will write that number in the book or you will get a preprinted tag which you can print on your own printer and you stick that inside the book so that it will be there permanently and then you take the book out and leave it somewhere where someone will find it. *use 25:18 She writes ID number inside book cover*
NATS UP HERE- 21:56 Medium shot of Aisling at computer with BC on screen- nats of her talking about number of releases in Nashua.
STANDUP
Finding unique ways to release books is an appealing part of the program. I'm releasing "The Education of Laura Bridgman" a book about a New Hampshire woman who became the first deaf and blind person to learn language, nearly a half century before Helen Keller. This one is going into the wild in the Cafe on the Corner in Dover.
SOT Tape 1
In many cases you might put a label on the front or a post-it note that says this really is a free book so take it and you leave it on a restaurant table, in a store, on a park bench, in the back pocket of the airline seat in front of you when you're on the airplane. Someplace where people might look and see a book and think hmm what's that and pick it up and discover that it's for them, that it's like a treasure, a present and they get to take this home and they read it and hopefully turn around and leave it someplace else for somebody else to find and so that makes the world our library you will suddenly find books that you can take home and read and enjoy in places outside of a book store or a library.
TRACK
Of course, looking for books is part of the appeal.
SOT Tape 1
It's a scavenger hunt. You have a few clues to work with and you know you're going to find something or you hope you're going to find something that could be wonderful, but you don't know and that adds an element of adventure to daily life that we don't have in our lives so much anymore.
BUTT BITES TOGETHER
SOT Tape 1
One of the themes at BookCrossing.com is "the world is your library" and I went out looking for one of these books that was listed at bookcrossing.com here at Marshall's Dept. Store nearby and it gave me a sudden perspective of I might find something here that I'm not expecting. Even though I'm looking for the book, there is still that element of will I really find the book, is it really here and just going into a dept. store with that totally different mindset is something that I found tremendously exciting.
TRACK
While you might not find a book, you may find an adventure or new ways of interacting with the world around you.
SOT Tape 1
BookCrossing.com is one of many projects online, I'm participating in this, I'm participating in many of these projects and I'm hoping that people will go to websites like this and will find books like this and they too will create more projects where we can reach each other in unusual ways and things that will enhance each other's lives.

script iconIntro Re-districting
Return to index of stories...
The fight over redistricting continues. Thursday, house members discussed various redistricting plans, but little apparent progress was made, even though the Supreme Court has warned it will impose a House and Senate redistricting plan if legislators cannot reach consensus.

soundup: tape 1 10:12:15 Let me tell you, this is some great cause. One person, one vote, one state.
Track; That's what's at stake, according to the Democrats who began the day with this rally at the statehouse.
bite: tape 1 9:51:00 We did not want to be in this court fight. We worked and worked and worked with the Republicans. We begged them to come to terms with us. They refused. We're in the court now and the court will honor one person, one vote.
Track: In fact, this was the guiding principle enunciated by the supreme court during last week's oral arguments in the redistricting case.
Bite: supreme court tape 15:30:44 There's no telling what we are apt to do. I can assure you however, that one man, one vote is going to be a more important factor in our deciding this case than apparently it has been in the plans that have been put forward, and I hope you will renew your efforts to spare us the time and agony of solving this situation which should be solved by you.
Bite: tape 1 10:23;20 This is not about blaming anybody for where we are at this particular moment, because quite frankly, we all share the blame. We had an opportunity to get something done. Whether we tried or didn't try, we didn't get it one.
Track: House Republican leadership called this forum hoping to sell what it's calling a compromise plan to Democrats as well as Republicans.
Bite: tape 1 10:38:45 I think it's a reasonable plan. I think this plan accomodates the 10 points that were raised by the Democrats in our meetings and I believe it's in the best interest of the state of NH for this legislature to get around some product that could become a bill that we could vote on that the Senate could ratify.
Bite: tape 1 10:39:28 All I'm asking of you today is ask questions of me if you have them. Ask questions of leadership both on the Republican side and Democratic side. And ask why isn't this a plan that would work or something that could be fine-tuned so we could move forward for the people of NH.
Track; But House Democratic leader Peter Burling replied the Republican plans allow too much variation between districts in the number of voters.
Bite: tape 1 10:43:44 We are miles apart, a gulf apart because we don't agree on the fundamental issue - should the principle of one person, one vote govern, or should it not?
Track: But many Republicans insist there are other principles written into the NH constitution including the protection of town and county lines as political and electoral boundaries.
Bite: tape 2 11:08:38 And that is the principle that we govern by consent. It is only within that context that one man/one vote means anything, and what that means is, individually, we assemble, create municipalities, political jurisdicitions within we live and work, and function, in which we have a community of interest. And it is within those political jurisdictions that we exercise the concept of one man/ one vote.
Track: Representative John Pratt, who presented his own plan to the court, warned the house members that like he passengers on the Titanic, they face some tough choices.
Bite: tape 2 10:51:34 So choice 1 is to pull up one of those nice chairs on the deck and watch and sink. Choice 2 is to sit down and work out a plan as equals.
Standup: tape 3 13:56:48 The House has until mid-July to reach a consensus plan. The Senate faces a redistricting deadline much sooner, next Monday, June 24th. If they don't reach a concensus plan by then, the court will impose one.
Track: Neither side in the Senate seems optimistic about reaching consensus in time.
Bite: tape 3 13:29:11 I believe there was a compromise plan put forward a long time ago, that there were a lot of agreements, that a lot of districts were agreed to, I think we were very close to a compromise and we think we should be working from where that compromise almost came together.
Bite; tape 3 13:14:44 So now we have a decision coming out Monday that's going to affect an awful lot of people in the state of NH as to where their towns are going to line up with which senators, and unfortunately it's out of our hands.
Track: For NH Outlook, I'm richard Ager.

The groups said the state is making progress, but more needs to be done.

Enterasys Networks appears poised to move almost all of its 120 Portsmouth employees to Andover Massachusetts. While the company says no firm decision has been made, employees have received written notification that the company is consolidating offices.Enterasys is a spin off from the former Cabletron Systems and has been battered recently because of a government investigation, the resignation of its three top executives, and lawsuits by individuals and investors.

script iconLand Protected
Return to index of stories...
Three hundred acres of fields and forests in Deering are now protected from development. The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests bought the land and will name it after Folk singer Tom Rush. The land near the center of town was bought with the help of an anonymous foundation. The area will be managed for recreation, timber, wildlife habitat, watershed protection and scenery.
script iconSpring Crops
Return to index of stories...
Earlier this year we were worried about the drought but farmers say the wet spring has turned some farm fields into swamps. Growers say they may lose up to 30 percent of their crops and that could translate to higher prices. Wet conditions slow the growth of vegetables and the ripening of such fruits as strawberries.
