This weekend Derry will be hosting the 2nd annual New Hampshire Film Expo at the Adams Memorial Opera House. It is a chance for filmmakers to network, attend workshops and for the public to screen some 60 films. So, we thought this would be a good opportunity to learn more about the film industry in New Hampshire. But first, let's look at a sample of some of the films in this year's New Hampshire Film Expo.

Jeff talk to us more about making a film. How do you make a film? Is it harder in NH?
Judy tell me about starting the NH Film Expo. Why? Goals?
Jay explain the film industry in NH. What appeal does NH have to major feature moviemakers? Last major film in NH "On Golden Pond". Anything on the burner? Does state support Film & TV office well enough?
Jeff talk about the NH filmmaking community.
Judy talk about the importance of Film Festivals - the role they play in the industry.

The NH Division of Tourism and Travel expects more than 500,000 visitors to visit the Granite State this Columbus Day weekend. It's the second busiest weekend of the year. Many of those visitors will be coming to see our brilliant fall foliage. Producer Tai Freligh tells us more about leaf-peeping season.

NATS Foliage and natural sounds of trees
SOT 1:07:17 Carol Cambo Tape 1
It starts in Northern New England. The last week of September you'll get some really good color and then it kind of rolls right down. NH and the eastern, western parts of Massachusetts, Columbus Day weekend, the first two weekends in October are usually very good and you'll see great color all the way down the Connecticut coastline of Rhode Island through October.
TRACK
The changing of the leaves is a popular New Hampshire tradition. What a lot of people don't know is that the bright colors are in the leaves all the time.
SOT Dave Erler OL#36
Dave talks about how the color is revealed after the green pigments in the leaves fade away
TRACK
It's the cold temperatures and shorter nights of Fall that cause plants to cut back on production of this green pigment called chlorophyll. This year's warm weather has delayed the start of the leaf-changing season. But don't worry. A great resource for finding fall colors is a new website by Yankee Magazine. yankeefoliage-dot-com features an interactive map which allows people to track peak foliage throughout the state.
SOT 1:14:44 Carol Cambo Tape 1
The web is really proven to be an indispensable tool for travelers in general and I think fall foliage is such a short period of time, people really want to focus in on where they're going and what they're going to see and so we've been able to provide that with our years and years of experience doing foliage travel stories and researching.
TRACK
While most leaf-peepers are from the New England area, there are a large number from outside the United States.
SOT 1:10:15 Carol Cambo Tape 1
Germans love to come here during the fall foliage season. That's the biggest number of visitors from abroad and really from the UK.
BUTT BITES
SOT 1:10:35 Carol Cambo Tape 1
Canada is a growing segment of the foliage peepers here. The state tourism people here in NH said that Canadian visitation to the website tripled this year. And you know the exchange rate is getting better, but it's such a nice close vacation spot for them.
TRACK
Many people believe that besides New England, the only other place that you can find such a wide variety of fall foliage is Japan.

TRACK
According to the Division of Tourism and Travel, the Granite State can expect to see 7 million visitors who will spend 880 million this year. Twenty-five-percent of that business will be during the Fall season alone. Places like the General Store off Route 101 in Dublin will be among those who benefit from the tourism. Andy Freeman bought the store a year ago. He knows the economic impact of the fall foliage season.
SOT 1:21:58 Andrew Freeman Tape 1
Off a reference of last year we hope to see an increase of ten to fifteen percent in the beginning of the leaf peeping season and then hopefully up to a twenty percent increase for the center week or so.
TRACK
New Hampshire's State Parks also see an increase in visitors during September and October.
IS THE FALL FOLIAGE SEASON THE BUSIEST TIME OF YEAR FOR THE PARK?
SOT 2:01:01 Catsey Heath Tape 2
Definitely. Our business, our patronage probably quadruples at least. On the weekends, typically we have 3 to 4-hundred people throughout the summer and over the foliage we have over a thousand to up to sometimes two thousand a day.
TRACK
Catsey Heath is Park Manager at Miller State Park in Jaffrey.
WALK AND TALK 2:06:45 Catsey Heath Tape 2
It's the wide variety of the different trees that we have in the area that give us so many different colors. Such as the maple here, that are usually the first to change. They start out with the vibrant reds and then go to orange and yellow hues as well as the oak trees and the ash that we have in the area too.
TRACK
Miller State Park sees so much business that they often go over capacity.
SOT 2:01:33 Catsey Heath Tape 2
Maybe up to even once an hour our parking lot at the summit and the base will be completely full. So we have to shut down the park for probably ten or fifteen minute spans so some of the patrons will come out and we'll have room for more to come in.
TRACK
While the park may run out of space, it seems that there's an abundance of home town hospitality when the leaves change color.
SOT 1:17:21 Carol Cambo Tape 1
Because a lot of people are coming here on weekends, even a lot of the B&Bs and inns get booked up and so very progressive chambers of commerce we've heard about in Vermont and New Hampshire, they have lists of home owners who will become a B&B for the night for people that are desperate for rooms, so we don't let anybody go without a place to spend the night.
SOT 1:23:10 Andrew Freeman Tape 1
We're new to the area. I came from Boston. One thing I can say about Dublin in particular and hopefully it speaks for all of southern NH, this town has really embraced us as new neighbors and I certainly hope that a lot of people come up and not only visit me, but visit Dublin and visit the surrounding towns and enjoy the foliage, it should be a really good one this year.
TRACK
From Dublin, I'm Tai Freligh for NH Outlook.
