Hello. I'm Allison McNair. Welcome to NH Outlook.
script iconIntro Question 2
Return to index of stories...
Every ten years, voters in New Hampshire choose whether or not to have a constitutional convention. Changing the constitution is always a hot topic for debate.
Here's a look at some past debate and comment.

Thomas Jefferson
"…and as I wrote to Mr. Madison in a letter from Paris 'every constitution in the United States should be voided every 19 years' at the end of every generation at least. So, that the rising generation can rethink and recreate the United States in it's own image."
LPA-344
Joseph Eaton
"For two centuries, we have had the shortest and best constitution in the United States. And it may need some minor repairs, but it does not need measure rebuilding."
LPA-342
Spirou
"Once a convention assembles to amend the constitution, it can do what it wants."
LPA-415
Thomas Jefferson
"The world belongs to the living, not the dead. And I would urge you in the late 20th century to gather together in a sober constitutional convention and to rewrite the constitution for the 21st century relying somewhat on the wisdom of the past but chiefly on your own dreams for the future."
LPA-344
Jospeh Eaton
"When the constitution is changed, it's changed forever. And you can't tell what might happen decades hence. We better avoid that risk"

So, the question before us, Shall there be a convention to amend or revise the constitution?
Joining me to talk about the question are Former Governor Walter Peterson. He was the President of the convention in 1974. Representtive Merton Dyer attended the last consitutional convention in 1984.
