Rhode Island FireReturn to index of stories... |
Many of us awoke this Friday to news of the deadly Rhode Island nightclub fire. State Fire Marshal Don Bliss told me it's his worst nightmare. And, that it could happen here. Why does it take a tragedy of this magnitude, and on the heels of the Chicago stampede, to get people to pay attention to issues of safety? |
Homeland SecurityReturn to index of stories... |
The Dept of Homeland Security has launched a new campaign called "GET READY" --. The multi-million dollar tv, radio, website and hotline campaign is aimed at helping Americans be ready for a series of terrorist attacks. First duct tape, now this. How effective will the campaign be? |
Right to WorkReturn to index of stories... |
Hundreds came to Concord for a hearing on Right to work legislation. The bill would ban compulsory union dues. Dan. Dan, you were there. |
Impeachment FeesReturn to index of stories... |
Supreme Court chief justice David Brock, Justice John Borderick and retired Justice Sheman Horton were told this week that they weren't entitled to have their legal fees from Impeachment hearings and Senate trial paid by the state. The ruling came down from a special court panel that denied payment of some 2 million dollars in legal fees. |
New AGReturn to index of stories... |
This week, The Executive Council approved Governor Benson's nominee - Chesire County Attorney Peter Heed for State Attorney General. According to the union leader, the Governor says he nominated Peter Heed - for his energy and enthusiasm. That was apparent when Richard Ager caught up with Heed after his nomnation last week. |
Repub Phone JamReturn to index of stories... |
Did a republican consulting firm violate state election laws? The new State AG is apparently looking into that question. That's according to Friday's Boston Globe. The Democratic Party has been calling for the investigation after learning its get out the vote phone lines were jammed for about two hours on election day. The State republican party executive director resigned two weeks ago as the controversy came to light. But that hasn't stopped questions about the practice. |
Budget?Return to index of stories... |
The joint meeting of the House and Senate finance committees began the process of reviewing the Governor's budget proposal this week. Richard, give us some of the highlights. |
Josiah BartlettReturn to index of stories... |
After hearing concern that New Hampshire would be short of money to fund the mandate of No Child Left Behind - a new study suggests that the state will have all the funding it needs. The Josiah Bartlett Center for Public Policy reports that NH will have an extra 6 million dollars in federal aid after money is tapped for teaching, technology, special education and testing requirements outlined by the law. |
Charter SchoolsReturn to index of stories... |
Charter School supporters revived a bill that passed the legislature a year ago, but was later vetoed by Governor Shaheen. It would make it easier to open up to two charter schools a year with approval from the state board of education, instead of a local board. The bill passed by a two to 1 margin. Now goes to finance committee. |
BlizzardReturn to index of stories... |
Finally, we can't end this program without talking about the weather. My favorite story has to be from Temple.just outside Peterborough, where for more than a quarter of a century, snow clean up crews have been doing more than clear the streets, they take the extra time to plow out some 200 residential driveways. Not everyone was so lucky. These past few storms have busted some budgets. |
