Hello. I'm Allison McNair. Welcome to NH Outlook. |
Intro Anti war resolutinReturn to index of stories... |
Protest and patriotism. Are the two mutually exclusive? Some would argue it's an American right and even a duty to protest the war. But what message does it send to the troops? We'll get some perspectives on the issue in a moment. But first, Chip Neal takes us to a Portsmouth city council meeting where Monday's discussion focused on an anti-war resolution. |
Anti-war resolutionReturn to index of stories... |
Exterior of building Hear Pledge of Allegaince Color Guard marches in VO a councilman reading end of resolution - … and be it further resolved that we urge our gov't to adopt a foreign policy that achieves victory through diplomacy and engagement with the UN rather than resorting to war as a first option to resolve disputes avoiding and ending unnecessary combat in Iraq is the best way to support our troops and insure their safe and speedy return home. And be it further resolved that the Portsmouth City Clerk shall send copies of this resolution duly adopted to Pres. Busch US senators Gregg and Sununu and US Rep.Bradley. VO Nancy Brown - I think it's a democratic right and responsibility to stand up for what this country really stands for in terms of its values. This is an American tragedy Nancy Brown OC - I think that this will come back to us as a nation this is very serious what we're doing, and I think history will prove and show that this was really bad mistake a tragic thing that we're doing to another nation and its people irregardless of how bad Saddam Hussein is as a brutal leader. VO Dan Hicks - Unfortunately they have the same rights as we do I say unfortunately because I'm all for my country. The old saying is right or wrong I'm an American. Dan Hicks OC - Do we do the right thing all the time no. Is this the right thing - yes. They should not be out there protesting against this war when they have a man that has killed more people than we could kill in 10 years over there. And innocent people we're not there to kill their people we're there to liberate their people. VO Mayor Sirrell - None of us wants war, but we do want to keep our freedom and the only way for us to keep our freedom is for the soldiers to get in there and fight for us. Mayor Sirrell OC - They certainly do but they got their rights through us. That's the way I look at it. And you've got troops overseas that are seeing all of this and I think that's sad. They're over there fighting for their lives and I don't think it sets well. I don't know. Chip Standup 1 which means the wastepaper basket, you know. Chip VO Here is a sample from the public comment time. Where 13 people spoke on the resolution…. 6 for, 7 against. Montage of Public Coments Chip VO and here is a sample of the council's discussion on this issue Montage of Council discussion Chip Standup 2 This is obviously an emotional issue. We have two fundemental elements of our society colliding with each other. On the one side we have our democratic right to express our opinions. And on the other side we have our patriotic duty to support our troops. It's a paradox, and there is lots of tension around it. Vote count. Unanimous against Cover of Council VO Chip Sign off. DiscussionReturn to index of stories... |
Claire- We've heard the argument from people who say now that war is underway - the protests should stop - and support should be shown for our troops? Lionel - When you were serving in Vietnam, did you hear about protestors back in the states? Did it impact morale? Claire Ebel - what about rights of protestors? What about rights of avg citizen trying to get to and from work - When traffic is disrupted etc - is it effective? Tom, Does the message seem the same from peace protestors this time around? How differ? Tom, Is it a conflicted message - if support peace not necessariy anti American, favor use of force does not mean give straight ticket support to Bush on all the issues? Tom. What about immediacy of news in this war. For those serving in Iraq, now that info. is so accessible, do you think it impacts troops? Claire does that concern you? Lionel, when POWs came home from Vietnam, reaction from public was devastating - it wasn't thank you for what you've done.Think that will happen this time around? Tom are the peace rallies effective? Claire, is it a matter of judging these rallies as to whether they are effective or just simple right of freedom of speech? Tom/ Claire, What about media coverage of support our troops rallies vs. peace protests - what does that say about coverage. You said there may conflicting message on part of peace protestors - what do you mean? |
Intro 9/11Return to index of stories... |
At times, hundreds of thousands of demonstrators have taken their anti-war protests to the streets of the US and the world. One of the voices in the crowd is a Lee woman who has a unique perspective. Phil Vaughn reports. |

Photographs Narr1 - As often as they could, Andrea and Bob LeBlanc traveled the world. Andrea 612 - "He was always on this mission to better understand the people of the world. He knew a lot and wanted to experience them first hand. He thought that was the best way." Photographs and home video Narr 2 - Bob was a professor of cultural geography at the University of New Hampshire. When he wasn't teaching in his classroom, he and his family were learning abroad. Together, they visited lands that were very different than their own. They shared meals, ideas and their culture with the people they met. Andrea 643/659 "And he was convinced that if he did that, if more Americans did that it would be harder to make the distinctions of them and us." Photographs and video Narr 3 - Bob carried that belief like a diplomat and always looked forward to his next trip. On September 11, 2001, Bob flew out of Boston on his way to a geography conference. Hijackers were also on board. Shots/sounds of NY after towers have collapsed Andrea 340ish "People say, 'Do you still talk to Bob?' Not quite. When Bob and I would talk, it was often unexpected. We would talk about so many interesting things. He knew so many interesting things, so I can't write his lines. So now there's a huge void in my life without him." Dissolve to shots of Andrea with her dogs Narr 4 - Andrea is now a member of September 11 Families for Peaceful Tomorrows. They are people who lost loved ones on September 11. While they may support the US troops now in Iraq, they strongly oppose the war. Andrea - 1120 - "If I believe that war is not the answer and I believe that the UN should be supported by us, which I do, then I thought that I had better stand up and say so." Cut to shot of sign 9/11 families for peace in front lawn Narr 5 - These are Andrea's words -- perhaps Bob's legacy. Andrea 930 - Phil - What motivated you to put the sign up? "The more talk of war there was, the more I became concerned with public apathy. It frightened me." Narr 6 - Andrea has attended peace rallies from Concord to Washington DC. Publicly announcing her beliefs has not been easy. Andrea 1520 - "I don't know everything that Bob would have known. It's come up often with the kids that we wish we could talk with Bob about this - help make sense of all this. Bob would have known the bigger picture and I don't. But, I'm trying." Shot of sign Narr 7 - The power of these few simple words comes from the memories that Andrea lives with everyday. Andrea 1650 - "Terrorism has come as close as it can to the 9/11 families and we don't want other people to ever experience that." Andrea 2508 - Phil - If 9/11 had not happened, would you still be marching on the street? "I don't know. I feel like I have a responsibility to say these things because my voice, because I am a 9/11 family, has more clout. It's crazy, why should my voice mean anything more than others but I know that it does. Therefore, I can't stand by and be silent." Dissolve to sign and peace flags Narr 8 - For NH Outlook, I'm Phil Vaughn |
