If you could wake up tomorrow and be anyone in the world, who would you be?
That's one of the many questions we asked acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns when
we sat down with him recently on campus of the University of New Hampshire.
Burns was there to receive the UNH Pettee Medal Award, which is awarded in recognition of outstanding accomplishment or distinguished service to the state, the nation or the world.
Before the ceremony, we sat down with the filmmaker to talk about his work and his inspiration. We began by asking what he thought of the recent war coverage in Iraq, embedded reporters on the front lines and how the future will remember this time in history.

Return to index of stories...
As Ken Burns mentioned, New Hampshire is a place where down to earth people enjoy an uncomplicated way of life.
Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Taylor brings us those stories from time to time.
In this installment, Steve takes us to the Nelson Town Hall to kick up our heels at their Monday night contradance.

Steve Taylor visits the picturesque village of Nelson in the Monadnock region. Where there has been dancing in the town hall probably ever since it was built in 1787. Steve visits with the piano player who happens to be New Hampshire's most prolific contradance song writer Bob McQuillen, one of 15 people in the country to be selected as a National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts. Taylor also visits with Don Primrose, the caller at the dance who's philosophy is to "get them going in the right direction and then know when to be quiet".

If you want to try contra dancing, you'll find it happening in meeting halls around the state, including Nelson Town Hall in Cheshire County, every Monday night at 8pm. There's usually a nominal fee. In Nelson's case, it's 3-dollars per person.
script iconEclipse
Return to index of stories...
Finally, Thursday night, two billion people around the world, including those here in New England, will have a chance to see a total eclipse of the Moon. This is the first of three this year.
The entire eclipse will last about three hours.
Beginning around 10pm the moon begins to move into the earth's shadow.
About an hour later, the moon will be totally eclipsed and take on colors of copper and red and brown.
If skies are overcast and you miss the lunar light show, you can watch it online at nasa-dot-gov.
