The Democrats have another Presidential candidate - the question now is how this new candidate affects the overall campaign. To confirm or not to confirm. the governor's latest round of nominations go to an executive council.that's got some questions. And UNH addresses the ongoing problem of underage and binge drinking on College campuses. |

StephenReturn to index of stories... |
Governor Benson announced his nominee for Commissioner of Health and Human Services this week. Benson wants John Stephen to fill the seat vacated by outgoing Commissioner Nick Vailas. Vailas resigned after coming under attack due to an apparent conflict of interest. Stephen is currently the assistant commissioner for the New Hampshire Department of Safety. Josh, What does everyone think of this jump from safety to Health and Human Services? |
Other NomineesReturn to index of stories... |
Governor Benson made another nomination this week, for a seat on the Commission on the Status of Women. While the Executive Council will probably reject nominee Karen Testerman.questions are being raised about why the governor looked to her in the first place. Testerman is the executive director of a conservative research group. Critics say her views contradict the very purpose of the women's commission. Josh what's the latest on this nomination -where does it stand? |
No Child Left BehindReturn to index of stories... |
The New Hampshire Department of Education has released results of the statewide student assessment tests known as NHEAIPS. The Federal "No Child Left Behind" law is tied to these tests. And the law requires that schools show adequate yearly progress. If they don't, they'll be labeled "Schools In need of Improvement." A preliminary list has already identified eleven schools in New Hampshire. Tom Fahey, what does this mean for the schools on the list? |
Intro HartReturn to index of stories... |
This weekend the University of New Hampshire will host students and officials from Colleges around the country. The conference is about campus celebrations. Sounds fun.but the reality is much more serious.as UNH President Ann Hart said in her "State of the University" address this week. |
Hart SpeechReturn to index of stories... |
52:00 - A federal report released last week by the National Academy of Sciences calls for us to create and sustain a strong societal commitment to reduce under age drinking. I would ask all of us, students, faculty, administrators, families, teachers, mentors, to work together to confront underage and binge drinking in our community. I ask our neighbors in the town of Durham, I ask our students our law enforcement, our professors and staff, I ask my administration and me to work on this issue this national growing trend that must be reversed. And the student summit is just one small step in that process. |

This weekend's summit is in response to a series of sports celebrations that turned violent this past spring. Dozens of people were arrested. Many of those arrested, according to Hart, weren't University students. They were young people from surrounding towns and as far away as Masschusetts. Questions for those participants at this weekend's conference will include why people binge drink - and what can be done about it. |
