Gregg ArrestReturn to index of stories... |
The police quickly learned that the car. this silver Monte Carlo. was the same one used in the kidnapping and robbery of Mrs. Gregg in Virginia earlier in the week. When officers approached the car. one suspect tried to run away and the other one drove off. He crashed into a fence nearby. and they were both arrested. Meantime. The Greggs greeted the President when he arrived in Portsmouth for his speech Thursday. He embraced the family, after stepping off Air Force One. Later on. when the President introduced the Greggs at his Manchester speech, She got a big ovation. |

We'll have more on the President's visit in just a moment. But before we get to that, more on the kidnapping ordeal of Kathleen Gregg. Her fast thinking may have saved her life. She sat down with her husband, and Scott Spradling of WMUR-TV, and told her chilling story. |
Tag Gregg's WifeReturn to index of stories... |
After lying tied up on the floor for more than an hour, Mrs. Gregg persuaded the men to untie her and take her to the bank, where she withdrew some cash. That decision, police say, may have saved her life. |
Intro Bush ManchesterReturn to index of stories... |
Now onto the President. who made speeches in Portsmouth and Manchester during his Thursday visit to New Hampshire. Producer Richard Ager has our report. |
Bush VisitReturn to index of stories... |
Soundup: hail to the chief Track: President Bush began his stop in NH with a visit to the Pease Air National Guard Base where he addressed members of the Army and Air Guard. It was an audience receptive to Bush's account of why he launched the invasion of Iraq. I acted because I was not going to leave the security of the American people in the hands of a madman. I was not about to stand b7 and wait and trust in the sanity of Saddam Hussein. So our coalition acted in one of the swiftest and most human campaigns in history. And 6 months ago today, the statue of the dictator was pulled down. Since the liberation of Iraq, our investigators have found evidence of a clandestine network of biological laboratories. They have found advanced work on long range missiles….was a deceiver and a danger. Track: After speaking to a military audience, Bush delivered essentially the same speech to a business luncheon in Manchester. For this audience, the President argued that millions of lost jobs are not his fault. When I took office, the stock market had been declining for 9 months. And the economy was headed into a recession. Just as we started to recover, the enemy attacked us on 9?11 and they struck a blow to our economy. And then investor confidence was shaken by scandals in corporate America. Dishonest behavior we cannot and will not tolerate in America. Track: Bush insisted his rounds of tax cuts were the right thing at the right time for the American economy, and alluded to the Democrats competing to run against him in the next election. Just as our economy is coming around, some are saying now is the time to raise taxes. To be fair, they thing anytime is right to raise taxes. For the sake of job creation, people looking for work, the U.S. congress should make every one of the tax cuts permanent. There were a number of demonstrators gathered to protest the President's visit. We would have shown that to you, but the White House team insisted that all television equipment be placed inside the hall by early this morning, well before any protestors arrived. Track: Inside the hall, reaction to the President's speech was largely favorable, with some exceptions. DID HE TOUCH ON THE THEMES YOU CAME TO HEAR? Yes - there were two key elements….that we have to respond to. I came here to hear the president's plans on how he would revive the economy…from the President. DID YOU HEAR ANYTHING NEW ABOUT HOMELAND SECURITY? I wouldn't call it new, I would call it an increased….and that's who we're tyring to support. Track: For N.H. Outlook, I'm Richard Agner |
Security BreechReturn to index of stories... |
There were a few tense minutes for the Secret Service just before President Bush left the Manchester airport. An unidentified woman was taken into custody after driving through a security gate which had been left open for the President's motorcade. There was a quick police chase. which ended when the woman's car was rammed by an airport operations truck on the tarmac. Police say the President was at least five miles away and was never in danger. |
Intro Bush PollReturn to index of stories... |
A new Granite State Poll shows the president has a shrinking set of approval ratings. Barrett Lester sat down with Andrew Smith of the UNH Survey Center to discuss the significance of the poll's results. |
Intro City YearReturn to index of stories... |
Soon after the attacks on September 11, President Bush called upon Americans to volunteer. City Year, a community service program for young people has been doing just that. But Congress, it seems, has not been fully supportive in terms of funding the program. Their budget this year was cut in half. Despite that, they've endured and in Portsmouth today, City Year New Hampshire kicked off a new year. Phil Vaughn reports. |
Intro DairyReturn to index of stories... |
Finally, this weekend is your last chance to get out and visit an old fashioned country fair. Many of the events you'll see at the Sandwich fair reflect the rich character of New Hampshire's agricultural heritage. One of the highlights is the dairy show. That's where this next story comes in. In our continuing series, Agricultural Commissioner Steve Taylor takes us up close and personal to a dairy show in Lancaster. Steve, by the way, is also a dairy farmer. So you'll see why this is a special slice of his Real New Hampshire. |

Taylor Dairy show Steve Taylor visits a 4-H Dairy show at the Lancaster Fair. We meet judge Larry Kempton who explains what a dairy judge is looking for in a cow. You want good size udders firmly attached and with teets well spaced and long enough to accomodate the milking machine. In gerneral he is looking for those qualities that will make the cow an efficient producer of milk with minimum trouble to the farmer. We also spoke with 2 young 4-H'ers who were showing cows at this year's fair. |
