Quite a week. Let's begin with the visit of President Bush on Thursday. He stopped at Pease Air National Guard Base, and attended a business luncheon in Manchester. The speech he delivered in both locations was a clear effort to defend the administration's actions in Iraq and the tax cuts which are the essence of his economic plan. Here's a bit of what the President had to say, and some reaction.

Bush/ Pease tape 2 10:22:10 I acted because I was not going to leave the security of the American people in the hands of a madman. I was not about to stand by and wait and trust in the sanity of Saddam Hussein. so our coalition acted in one of hte swiftest and most humane campaigns in history. And six months ago today, the statue of the dictator was puled down.
Bush/Manchester tape 1 12:20:00 For the sake of job creation, for the sake of people looking for work, the U.S. Congress should make every one of the tax cuts we passed permanent.
Bush/Manchester tape 2 12:50:57 I came here to hear the president's plans on how he would revive the economy and also successfully get us out of the situation in Iraq. I didn't hear positive solutions to either one. A lot of rhetoric but no bold plans. I was very disappointed. In fact, if anyone came here hungry for solutions, they left with an empty stomach.

John Stephen was confirmed this week as the new Commissioner of Health and Human Services. Even though Stephen has no background in providing health care, Executive Councilor Ray Wieczorek seemed to speak for the Council when he said there are thousands of people at the agency who have that experience. What the Council wants is someone to take charge. Let's listen to John Stephen said shortly after his confirmation about his first priority.

11:36:16 We need to look at the budget issues right now because one of the most important priorities is making sure in November that we are able to report to the fiscal committee as far as the budget reductions that are in that budget right now. And I'm going to assemble a group of folks tomorrow - we've already begun to discuss those issues and there needs to be a thorough examination of that budget, again with an eye towards fiscal responsibility but also making sure we meet the needs of those of the most needy population of this state.

Following the Red Sox win over the Oakland A's, hundreds of students poured into the streets. at UNH Durham, at Southern New Hampshire University, and at Plymouth State University Monday night.
At UNH.Close to 600 students converged on Main Street -- yelling and cheering.
Students called it a big, happy parade.
The police saw it a little differently.
They say it wasn't a riot, but it was an illegal assembly.
So officers in riot gear moved in. and they used pepper spray on a number of students to break up the crowd.
We obtained this videotape from a student who was there.

This is a reproduction of the contract that some say started it all - the sale of Babe Ruth by the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees - day after Christmas, 1919. Harry Frazee, the Boston owner, got $100,000 which he spent producing a Broadway musical. The Yankees got the game's greatest player and went on to win 26 World Series. Boston is still waiting.
