Intro Lieberman ProfileReturn to index of stories... |
In the 2000 election, Senator Joseph Lieberman won the Democratic vice presidential nomination, only to lose in the general election. This time, he is running for the Presidential nomination. Outlook is following all the candidates on the campaign trail to bring you their stories. This is Joe Lieberman's. |
Lieberman ProfileReturn to index of stories... |
Soundup: Lieberman campaigns tape 2 15:40:20 I'm running for President as an independent-minded Democrat. Track: Joe Lieberman is betting his candidacy on a belief. He is convinced that Democratic and independent voters want a leader who stands for moderation and principled compromise. Soundup: Bite: Lieberman in Epping tape 12:46:40 ** Bush has left nothing in the national bank account to do the things we need to do like invest in education or healthcare I mean he goes into war which I think was inappropriate in the first place well that one I respectfully disagree on… Track: His challenge has been selling moderation at a time when the country is sharply divided, especially over the war in Iraq. Bite: Democrat Dinner tape 3 TC: 8:19:40 We will work together…. Folks, I said it before and I will say it again, I respect your position, lets disagree respectfully, let me finish my remark Bite: Lieberman Interview tape 19:48:20 DO YOU STILL WANT TO SEND IN MORE TROOPS? Yeah, I didn't want to look back, and say as we did after September 11, "I wish we had stopped Osama bin Laden before he struck us. I never wanted to look back and say after Saddam Hussein struck us, "Why didn't we knock him over before he hurt us so badly?" Do we have to send more troops now? Here's my position on that. We have to do whatever is necessary to support and protect the 130,000 Americans who are in uniform there now. That may require, in the short term, sending more troops. Track: Lieberman's continued support for the Iraq war is not the first time he's been at odds with much of his own party. Soundup: Politics 'n Eggs tape 3 11:27:10 *** You want to know something? Bush is not a bad guy. Track: Joe Lieberman grew up in Stamford Connecticut, the son of immigrant parents. He was captivated early on by the power of politics to change society. The first in his family to go to college, Lieberman attended Yale and became involved in the civil rights movement. In 1963, he went to Mississippi to work on black voter registration. Bite: Lieberman Interview tape 19:43:20 It was my first involvement in public service. It wasn't elected politics. It showed me that the force of an idea, the pursuit of justice, if you work hard enough at it can draw and effect, you can have a result. And that work, and the work that many others did, much more than I, some giving their lives, led to the Voting Rights Act, the Civil Rights Act, and ended a terrible period of bigotry, legal bigotry, racial segregation in America. Track: After law school, Lieberman won election to the Connecticut state Senate and later became the state's attorney general. In 1988, he ran for the U.S. Senate and beat incumbent Lowell Weicker. In 2000, he gained wide-spread fame when Al Gore chose him as the Democratic vice-presidential candidate. Bite: Lieberman Interview tape 19:46:26 I loved every minute of the 2000 campaign until after Election Day. It ended in a very bitter way. Most outrageously that five Justices of the Supreme Court decided who was going to be President and Vice President instead of the voters of America and more particularly the voters of Florida. But you know, I turned back to my work in the Senate. Sometimes people say to me, "Do you think back to it?" Of course I do, it bothers me constantly. Constantly may be a little too strong. Regularly. I think about what could have been. Al Gore and I spent a lot of time in 2000 warning the country about what a Bush presidency would be like, and the reality of it has been even worse. But now I've got the chance to make it better.. Life and politics are about second chances. Soundup: Lieberman in Manchester tape 13:52:50 * You want to do this right here?" "right here." "Okay" Track: Lieberman's second chance began when Al Gore decided not to run again. What began with a media frenzy has stretched into months of NH grassroots campaigning. Soundup: Lieberman in Epping tape 13;00:04 * Easy riders - this could describe my journey through America. Track: Lieberman is often asked about his religion. Bite: Politics 'n Eggs/Lieberman tape 2 ** 10:29:29 You do have a very strong Jewish faith, and as a potential president, do you think you can put that aside and listen to both sides equally and not just the Israelis? It's a fair question, it's a question that was asked of President Kennedy when he ran as to whether some people asked him are you going to be more loyal to the Vatican or the church than you are to the United States of America and I give the same answer that he did which is when you put you left hand on the bible and you right hand in the air to take the oath of office you swear your loyalty to the constitution of the United States and to the people of the United States and that's exactly what he did and that's exactly what I will do. Bite: Lieberman jobs tape 1 00:09:33 We've got to have a change, and I feel very strongly that I'm the one who could win - center out. Like Clinton was. We've got to convince people that we'll be as strong and more effective than Bush on security, and we'll get the economy going again like in the 90's." "Get the guys back to work." "get the guys back to work. Nothing beats having a job." Track: To bring back jobs, Lieberman is proposing a range of measures aimed at stimulating business. Bite: Politics 'n Eggs/Lieberman tape 1 01:22:15 I'm proposing an immediate investment tax credit of twenty percent for business acquisition of information technology equipment in an attempt to get that critical sector of our economy going this year to have it short term so that there's some stimulus for spending this year and then special incentives for those who invest in small or start up businesses. Bite: Lieberman Interview tape 19:54:35 DO YOU BELIEVE THAT BUSINESSES SHOULD PAY HIGHER TAXES BECAUSE THEY PAY SO MUCH LESS THAN THEY USED TO? Yeah I do. And I think it begins not so much with raising the corporate income tax, but closing corporate loopholes, tax loopholes. This is unfair. The fact that we're losing more than 2 bil. Dollars a year because American corporations locate their headquarters over seas, it's legal but it's not right, and we oughta make it illegal. Soundup: Lieberman campaigns tape 2 15:41:10 This administration talks about family values, but too many of its policies don't value families. Track: Lieberman believes that America's families are under stress and need help. Case in point: Tracy Degges whose son tried to help her after her surgery, but still needed to pay his child support. Bite: Lieberman campaigns tape 1 11:02:55 My boy went for the Family leave act and found out he wasn't going to make any money. Well, hello. You can't pay child support, you're going to jail. Bite: Lieberman campaigns tape 1 10:54:54 I want to lead a campaign as president to create a new paid family and medical leave plan for America's workers. Bite: Lieberman campaigns tape 2 15:44:28 *** For quite a lot less than a dollar a week, you can put enough money into a fund so that any one of us, if we come to that time of crisis in our family, spouse sick, we're sick, child born - better news, parent really sick, you can take off up to 4 weeks and get a minimum of $200 a week and a maximum of $700 a week. Pretty good deal for less than a dollar a week put in. Track: Lieberman says extending family leave is a moral choice, as is his health insurance plan for every child. Bite: New Mexico Debate tape 10:51:45 Every baby born in America will leave the hospital, not just with a birth certificate, but with a medakids card that will guarantee them health insurance up until the age of 25. Track: Lieberman says every campaign needs some big ideas, like finding a cure for chronic diseases. Bite: Lieberman interview tape 19:56:40 We are in reach of curing some chronic diseases, cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, Alzheimers Parkinson's, diabetes, and we can do it if we devote a focused series of investments to it. That's what the American center for cures will be. Track: Lieberman believes a similar large-scale approach is needed to fight the roots of terrorism. Bite: Lieberman campaigns tape 2 15:49:10 *** There is a civil war going on within the Islamic world between this extreme, fanatical inhumane violent group of terrorists who would plunge the world into a religious war if they had the opportunity. And the rest of the Muslim world, which is like you and me, literally, wanting to live a better life, wanting to live a freer life. Unless we get together with other nations of the world and help them open up those societies, help them live better lives, the danger is - some of them - more of them are going to gravitate over to the fanatics as their answer - and we can't let that happen. I want to lead and create an international Marshall plan for the Muslim world. Track: That plan, inspired by the original Marshall plan that reconstructed the devastated nations of western Europe after WW2, would focus on freer trade and economic aid for the Islamic world. The ultimate aim - raise their standard of living and create hope where there is now anger and resentment against the West. Soundup: Lieberman campaigns tape 3 18:22:50 ** music "Joe's for me, 1-2-3, " Standup: Joe Lieberman has prepared his entire career for this time - but his ability to find honor in compromise, and reluctance to engage in highly partisan campaigning have created a distance between his candidacy and many Democratic voters. Lieberman Interview tape *** 19:53:07 THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF TALK ABOUT ANGER IN THIS ELECTION CYCLE. DO YOU PERSONALLY FEEL ANGER AT THE PRESIDENT? Yeah, I don't feel anger at the President personally. As far as I can see George Bush is a good man. He's just been a very bad President. Soundup: Gore endorses Dean Track: But if polls are any indication, many Democrats are choosing a candidate who has few reservations about criticizing the President. Though Lieberman remains upbeat, he could barely hide his shock that his former running mate, Al Gore, had endorsed Howard Dean. Bite; Lieberman newser tape 01:09:30 I was surprised about the decision, I was surprised that Al Gore didn't notify me before I learned about from the media, that would have been the right thing to do. I was surprised that Al Gore would endorse a candidate that stands for so many things that Al Gore has not stood for. Track: Since he abandoned campaigning in Iowa, New Hampshire is Joe Lieberman's first testing ground. He is hoping for support from the voters who supported John McCain last time. Soundup: Lieberman jobs tape 1 00:02;30 Independents? Good, you can have a big effect on this primary." "that's why we vote that way." Track: To underline his commitment to doing well in NH, Lieberman has rented an apartment in Manchester and will live here until the primary. END OF SCRIPT |

Shot outside debate N1 - All nine of the Democratic primary candidates were in Durham recently for a debate. Lothar Patten was there to meet them. Meet Kushinich Lothar clip - I want to meet Joe Lieberman. Big Joe is my man. N2 - Lothar and his friend, James Tucker have been taping these encounters for a documentary. Sound of man meeting Lothar - "the film is called Nice Man Cometh." Dissolve to shot of Lothar and James walking out of store N3- Lothar and James' friendship started by chance, at a coffee shop in Portsmouth. Lothar 1000 "I met James about a year and two months ago." James 420 "He immediately struck me as someone very interesting, we started talking about his ghostly friends so I was intrigued." N4- Those ghostly friends, Lothar says, live here. And for three years, this cemetery in Portsmouth was also Lothar's home. Lothar 615 "During the warmer months I lived in a cemetery, under a bridge and in York at a place called Falling Pond." N5- Until recently, Lothar was homeless. He spent a lot of time on the streets waiting for a spot to open in public housing. And according to James, Lothar did what he could to help his homeless friends. James 618 "Despite the tough circumstances that he had and still has he's an extremely generous guy, he knows most of the homeless people and will buy them things and when he has some extra money will give it to them." N6- James is an associate professor of Sociology at the University of NH. His hobby is documentary film making. This is the project he and Lothar are working on. Clip from tape Lothar 1130 "James told me the presidential candidates are coming here how about going to get some of them? I'll make you a president of men." N7- So this summer, Lothar and James set out to meet the candidates. Shots meeting John Edwards Sound of video Lothar 1255 Phil -"What do you like to talk about with the candidates? Two things. Homelessness problems throughout N.E. and Sept 11." Clip of meeting candidates Lothar 2044 "While I ventured around this land in my travels, I've seen the homelessness problem increasing. It just doesn't seem to get any better. It's gotten better for me because I was helped by housing. But people who are homeless, that's a major problem." James 1905 "He's an advocate for the homeless, not in the traditional sense. Personally he helps homeless people but he sees this project as a way to advocate for the homeless more broadly." Lothar - "I would not wish anyone to be out on the streets. It's tough out there." Sound Lothar 1610 Phil -"How do the candidates react to your questions about homelessness? The only man out of the whole bunch who was good was John Kerry. He seemed to be concerned about homelessness for veterans." Clips with Kerry James 1729 "I like the juxtaposition of someone vying to be the most power man in the world and someone who by all outward measures is not very powerful but is a compelling person." Sound - "We need to get you in the debate now or you might miss it." N8 - For 90 minutes, Lothar watched and listened. Sound of debate Lothar - Phil "Did they talk about homelessness? Mrs. Braun and Dean mentioned it." Shot of meeting Clark Lothar - "This has been so good. Now I'll go home and let it replay through my brain. It's been good." N9- Except for Al Sharpton, Lothar has met all the candidates. He hopes that whoever wins will rmember his question. Lothar 2400 "I'm hoping that the next man to be in the presidency will get out of that war over there. I want to see people get health care and have a place to live. That's what I think of it." N9 - For NH Outlook, I'm Phil Vaughn. |
