He WAS the front-runner, leading the presidential pack.
Howard Dean was high in the polls and first in fundraising.
But his poor showings in the past 16 primaries have taken him out of the running.
Here's some of what the Vermont Governor had to say at Wednesday's announcement.

THE SCREAMING FOR JOHN EDWARDS. HE SPENT MORE TIME AND MONEY IN WISCONSIN THAN JOHN KERRY AND IT SHOWED WITH A CLOSE SECOND PLACE FINISH.

--SOT--

objects in your mirror may be closer than they appear.

--TRACK--

EXIT POLLS REVEALED WISCONSIN VOTERS FOCUSED ON THE EIGHTY THOUSAND MANUFACTURING JOBS LOST IN THE STATE SINCE PRESIDENT BUSH TOOK OFFICE. JOHN EDWARDS CAME OUT IN FRONT AMONG INDEPENDENTS. JOHN KERRY DID BEST AMONG DEMOCRATS. HE CONTINUED TO ATTACK THE PRESIDENT.

--SOT--

we believe the job of the president is to put americans back to work.

--TRACK--

FOR JOHN KERRY IT WAS WIN NUMBER SIXTEEN. THE ELECTABILITY FACTOR WAS BIG. THAT'S WHY THIS COOK VOTED FOR KERRY.

--SOT--

there's only one reason, i don't want to see bush in there for another four years

BUT THE EVENING, AND NOW THE DAY MAY BELONG TO JOHN EDWARDS WHO HAS MANAGED TO SLOW JOHN KERRY'S BIG MO AND FORCE A SHOWDOWN ON SUPER TUESDAY

Next week, Hawaii, Idaho and Utah hold their contests.
The ``Super Tuesday'' contests take place in 10 states on March 2, with a total of 1,151 delegates at stake.
script iconIntro Kerns Expulsion
Return to index of stories...
Moving now to state politics - The New Hampshire House Ethics Committee Wednesday recommended unanimously that Bedford Republican John Kerns be expelled from the House on ethics violations.
Kerns had been accused of using his status as a legislator to threaten and intimidate. He was also charged with writing bad checks with "State of NH" printed on them.
The committee found that Kerns had "violated the public trust by using the powers and resources of his office to advance his own interests".
Once they decided to recommend expulsion from the legislature, the Acting chairman, former State Senator Ned Gordon, took the report to deliver to the speaker.
The ethics committee chairman, Shawn Jasper, had earlier recused himself from deliberations.

Shawn Jasper/ Chair - House Ethics Cmte - "I think it has distressed and embarrased a great many members of the House.involved in taking action.
Ned Gordon/ Acting Chair - House Ethics Cmte - "IS IT A TOUGH PROCESS TO GO THROUGH? Very difficult. It's very important because.some action be taken."

If the House agrees, Kerns would be the first representative to
be expelled since 1913. That vote could take place as early as tomorrow.
The 23-year-old University of New Hampshire student says unspecified medical problems have prevented him from participating in the ethics hearings and he says the sessions have been a witch hunt.

VO:
This ribbon cutting ceremony today marked the completion of the terminal addition at Manchester Airport. It's part of an ongoing five hundred million dollar multiyear capital expansion project at the growing airport.
SOT
Dillon
11:00:00-:45 Certainly the completion of the terminal completes two important goals. First it allows us to enhance our reputation… for providing quality customer service, new security, new business center… new ticket counter… Secondly it allows us to expand…. And allow us to attract new carriers who are not here today.
VO:
Airport Director Kevin Dillon is confident that this 25 million dollar addition as part of the airport's 10 year old master plan will keep up with consumers' needs.
11:22:25-11:23:00 We believe what we are building here today…. Will allow us to handle 5-7 million passengers…. Question about parking:…. We today have 10K spaces in inventory….so there's plenty of parking here at Manchester Airport.
SOT
Stand Up 11:40:24
This seventy five thousand foot expansion provides a 30 percent increase in total termal space… significantly enhancing the customer experience here at Manchester Airport.
SOT
Gov. Benson
11:21:21-11:21:33 It is THE most friendly airport, even though it has grown in size, it hasn't lost its appeal as a friendly casual place… that's different than any other airport, and I've been to lots.
SOT
Pat McDermott
11:42:43-:05 We've seen that having a viable airport is important for several reasons… economic… tourism. It's easy to get from place to place here.
SOT
Carol Huber
11:20:40- 11:20:58 For my clients it would be more flights… we will have more choices and more competition…which is the best part for our clients.
VO
The terminal addition officially opens to outbound traffic tomorrow morning, but incoming flights and passengers will be the first to use the new facility tonight. At Manchester Airport, for New Hampshire Outlook, I'm Barrett Lester.
