Hello/Intro Gas PriceReturn to index of stories... |
Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. As we head into the Memorial Day weekend record numbers of Americans are expected to travel despite record high gas prices. Prices at the pumps have been increasing steadily in the last few weeks. Gas is now 50-cents higher per gallon than it was last year at this time. According to the American Automobile Association, the average price of regular unleaded gasoline in New Hampshire is 2-dollars-and-4-cents. That's compared to a-dollar-71 a month ago and a-dollar-48 last year at this time. Julie Donnelly brings us up to speed on WHY this is happening and what consumers need to know! |

It's not just drivers feeling the pinch of higher gas prices. Those traveling by air are feeling it too. Many airlines are increasing fuel surcharges on ticket prices to help offset the rising cost of jet fuel. |

The state is kicking off 2 new efforts to keep people safe on area roadways -- just in time for the Memorial Day holiday. At a news conference last week on the steps of the State House -- state and local leaders along with police officers talked about a crackdown on drunk driving and seatbelt use. Beginning this weekend and throughout the summer, 82 state, county and local law enforcement agencies will be out in force. In New Hampshire anyone under 18 is required to wear a seatbelt. The increased seatbelt and Drinking while Intoxicated patrols are supported by federal funds. |
Hampton TollsReturn to index of stories... |
Those one-way tolls at the Hampton tollbooths on 1-95 may be back this season--but, not yet. So, it will be business as usual for travelers heading into New Hampshire and Maine this weekend. The State Department of Transportation wants to try the one-way tolls again on an experimental basis to help alleviate traffic back-ups. Last year the plan was put in place for several weeks and the D-O-T says the benefits outweighed any problems. The state's Executive Council will be ruling on the matter. A decision could come as early as next week. |

Q Margaret Joyce: The state's tourism industry relies heavily on foreign workers to get thru the busy summer season. Last Month we spoke with some businesses worried about finding temporary help given a "CAP" on Seasonal visas.. They said the season was in jeopardy. What's the status on that front? Q The Governor cut funding for marketing the state as a Tourist Destination. The Spring TV Promotion for the summer season was cut 328-thousand dollars. There's a lot of competition for tourist dollars -- especially in NE. Will those CUTS have a negative impact on the hospitality industry? Q Who's the target group for these Promotional campaigns? NE, NY? Q In terms of visitor spending and trips, what are you expecting this year? Q This year you have a new web site -- walk us thru that? Q Memorial Day - is generally 4th busiest travel weekend in NH. We also have record high Gas Prices is that expected to put in crimp in this year's expectations? Q Given gas prices -- expect most of travelers coming from NE and NY? Q Any worries that the summer terrorism threat might spoil the summer season? Q What are the most popular attractions in the state for out-of-state visitors? |
