Intro Ed FundingReturn to index of stories... |
We begin with the HOT debate over how to pay for New Hampshire schools. Lawmakers took action this week on a new education funding proposal -- that has sparked tremendous controversy. Q Where do you begin on this one. KEVIN: I keep hearing about another SNAG -- a flaw in the legislation where numbers in SB 302 don't match up with negotiators spreadsheets? |
Ed Funding Return to index of stories... |
With that vote -- SB 302 moved to the Governor --who says he will allow the education plan to go into law without signing it, He also outlined his plan to shift control over education funding from the courts to the Legislature to solve the state’s long-standing education funding problem. Even before SB 302 passed, Mayors and other representatives from so-called DONOR towns -- expressed outrage over the new tax formula saying it would place a hardship on their communities, educational institutions and other services. |
State Dem ConvReturn to index of stories... |
Let's talk about the Democratic State Convention in Manchester over the weekend. Much of the buzz focused on John Lynch -- who will make his candidacy for Governor official June 10th. Congressman Jeb Bradley is seeking a 2nd term. He'll be facing Merrimack businessman Bob Bevill in the September 14th Republican primary. So-- a lot of races to follow. Q JAMES: I read on politicsnh.com that Lynch's no-income tax pledge didn't get the warmest reception at the state convention? |
PepinReturn to index of stories... |
A Ruling in the Linda Pepin Case. The former Volunteer for Governor Benson will be FINED for accepting a broker's fee for negotiating the Choicelinx state health contract. A NH Insurance Department Hearing Officer says Pepin was NOT acting as a consultant when she was paid 187-thousand dollars --and, therefore should pay the 42-thousand dollars in fines for working as a broker without a license. The Attorney General has gone to court to recover the fees, which the state paid originally to the insurance companies. Q Kevin: I know you followed this story closely. Your thoughts on the ruling? Could this have gone any other way. Pepin's Lawyer said Hearings were a waste of TIME.decision was made before testimony? |
Intro NaderReturn to index of stories... |
Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader was in NH on Thursday. He spoke about the 2000 election - and denied that he cost Al Gore the presidency. Speaking to a small gathering at the NH Political Library, Nader criticized both President Bush and Democrat John Kerry for being too similar on the issues of Iraq and the economy. Q RICHARD: Sounds like Mr Nadar is standing firm in his stand to stay in til the end? |
KerryReturn to index of stories... |
Senator John Kerry announced on Wednesday that he would accept the Democratic presidential nomination at the party's Boston convention this summer. even though the decision may put him at a financial dis-advantage. Kerry had been considering delaying the effective date of the nomination so he could raise and spend money thru August -- as President Bush will be able to do with the Republican convention a good 5 weeks later. Q KEVIN: Talk of a delay sparked an UPROAR. Why such a strong reaction? Kerry was accused of trying to skirt federal election law. This would not have been a precedent. |

underage drinkingReturn to index of stories... |
It is now a crime to host an underage drinking party in New Hampshire. Governor Craig Benson signed a law yesterday that takes effect in time for prom and graduation season. Property owners must know about the party to be subject to the penalty. An owner who notifies police of a party also can use that as a defense against prosecution. The law does not apply to using alcoholic beverages at legally protected religious observances or when someone takes drugs under a doctor's orders. -NH-XGR--Underage Drinking Benson signs law on underage drinking parties dewst -- It is now a crime to host an underage drinking party in New Hampshire. Riot UNH CrowdsReturn to index of stories... |
We all remember the student riots at UNH last year following sporting events where Bottles and rocks were thrown at police. The Governor has signed a law which stiffens penalties for those found throwing things at police or emergency personnel. The law makes those actions a FELONY -- punishable by up to 7-years in prison. It takes effect January 1st. Another law signed this week --makes it a crime to HOST an underage drinking party in NH. Police In Portsmouth have launched a "Booze Bounty" program. They're enlisting Pizza Delivery people and hotel clerks who would receive 50-dollars if their anonymous tips of suspicious activity leads to the arrest of a party host. A good response so far from businesess.tho many want to remain anonymous. Q All this is designed to attack the underage drinking problem. Effective? |

Two disturbances at the University of New Hampshire last year have prompted a new law. Governor Craig Benson signed a law that stiffens the penalty for throwing things at police, firefighters or emergency medical personnel during a riot. The law makes the offense a felony and means anyone convicted would face up to seven years in prison. It takes effect January first. Police in Portsmouth hope to enlist pizza delivery people and hotel clerks to help cut into underage drinking and parents who allow it. Under a new law, it's illegal for the owner or occupants of a home or hotel room to host a gathering of five or more minors who are drinking or using drugs. Portsmouth Police Sergeant Mike Schwartz says the program is called the "Booze Bounty." He says food delivery people and hotel clerks would receive 50 dollars if their anonymous tips of suspicious activity leads to the arrest of a party host. He says he's gotten a good response from businesses, though many want to remain anonymous. |

Half of those surveyed would rather barbecue with Mr Bush -- while 39-Percent chose Mr Kerry. 11-percent didn't know or refused to answer the question.
