Now, the former chief Lawyer for the Navy, a New Hampshire man, is speaking out against their treatment.
A conversation with John Hutson coming up.

Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook.
John Kerry has turned to a former rival -- fellow North Carolina senator John Edwards as his pick for
Vice President. Kerry announced his decision to supporters on his Website and later at a rally.
Many New Hampshire voters have had their eye on Edwards as a Vice Presidential candidate even before the state's presidential primary 6 months ago.
Edwards finished 4th in the New Hampshire primary.
But some town clerks who tallied write-in votes for vice president say Edwards was the top pick for the number two spot.
Edwards -- was elected to the Senate in 19-98. He decided against running for a second term after he launched his presidential campaign.
A lawyer from the south, Edwards is considered a moderate Democrat, a "self-made' son of a mill-worker.
Edwards turned 51 last month.

--SOT--

"I can choose only one running mate and today I have done so.

---TRACK---

JOHN KERRY ANNOUNCED HIS CHOICE FOR A VICE PRESIDENTIAL RUNNING MATE IN PITTSBURGH TUESDAY MORNING.

--SOT--

"I am pleased to announce with your help the next vice president of the United States will be Sen. John Edwards from North Carolina."

---TRACK---

DURING THE PRIMARY SEASON, POLLS SHOW JOHN EDWARDS GARNERED SUPPORT FROM YOUNGER VOTERS AND WOMEN. WHO LIKED HIS BOYISH GOOD LOOKS AND HIS BIG SMILE. HE RAN A STRONG RACE.

HE TALKED OF WANTING TO BUILD ONE AMERICA. INSTEAD OF WHAT HE SAID WERE TWO AMERICAS TODAY-- ONE FOR THE TOP WHICH GETS EVERYTHING IT WANTS. AND ANOTHER FOR EVERYONE ELSE.

BUT WHEN IT WAS CLEAR HE COULDN'T WIN, HE THREW HIS WEIGHT BEHIND KERRY. EDWARDS BIGGEST DRAWBACK, IS HIS LACK OF NATIONAL POLITICAL EXPERIENCE. A TRIAL LAWYER, HE'S ONLY SERVED ONE TERM IN THE U.S. SENATE. BUT BEING FROM NORTH CAROLINA MIGHT BRING IN VOTES FROM THE SOUTH.

--SOT--

"I have chosen a man who understands and defends the values of America."

=================================
5 ANDY SMITH: Clark was not one of the names said to be on the SHORT list. But, Richard Gephardt
was a strong favorite. 28-years in Congress.
Kerry said he wanted someone with EXPERIENCE -- why not GEPHARDT.
Edwards dozen years younger, fresh face -- was this a FUTURE vs PAST kind of choice for Kerry.
6 JENNIFER DONAHUE: Critics call Edwards GREEN, hasn't even served a full term in the Senate,
weak on International issues and National security. The Kerry campaign now says Edwards has
LIFE experience, not WASHINGTON experience.
=================================
THE BUSH CAMPAIGN HAS A TV-AD IN THE WORKS FEATURING SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN. THEY'RE LOOKING TO LAUNCH THE SPOTS TO COINCIDE with JOHN KERRY'S V-P ANNOUNCEMENT.
McCain has had a cool relationship with Bush --and was even talked about as a potential
V-P candidate for Kerry.
===========================
7 ANDY SMITH: What's the MOTIVATION behind the TV ad.
COULD this backfire for republicans.
LOOKING TO LABEL both as LIBERAL.
can't carry own state of N Carolina
8 JENNIFER DONAHUE: What about Elizabeth Edwards -- How much of an asset is she in the campaign.
And does a candidate's WIFE matter?
well informed, mother of 3 children Does a candidate's wife matter? Imagery in part.
9 ANDY SMITH: No Democrat has ever won the White House without a SOUTHERNER on the ticket?
When was the LAST time a V-P made a difference on the ticket. LBJ winning texas for Kennedy.
10 JENNIFER DONAHUE: What is Edwards main strength on domestic issues.
Life experience not WASHINGTON experience. Also fills the CHARM gap
11 ANDY SMITH: Despite all the hoopla, most people vote for the top of the ticket, the VEEP doesn't really matter. But, in a close election could EDWARDS make a difference.
Last time VEEP made a difference was the selection of LBJ by John F Kennedy.
12 Does the KERRY/EDWARDS ticket have a better chance than the GORE/LEIBERMAN ticket.
12 John Edwards -- Wealthy Trial Lawyer, said to be strong among MINORITIES.
Not afraid to talk about RACE.
13 When was the last time we've had 2 SENATORS on the ticket
14 Does the Edwards Selection bring BALANCE to the ticket.
makes ticket less regional.
Only won 1 state. So Carolina where he was born -- does that say something about his ability to get votes.
15 first do no harm okay.on that front.
generational argument. Race decided between 2 principal candidates.
Cheney
16 Liberal voters Gephardt would have been
in more trouble with liberal label.

Finally, the American military is currently holding more than 600 detainees at the Guantanamo base in Cuba.
Nearly all were captured during the war in Afghanistan in 2002, and none have been tried for any crime.
This has caused much criticism from foreign governments including allies like the British. It's also a cause of concern for many Americans like John Hutson, the former Judge Advocate General of the U.S. Navy.
Hutson, who is currently dean of the Franklin Pierce Law Center, says the "war on terror" is becoming a threat to human rights. Richard Ager spoke with John Hutson today.
