The biggest political story this week was the choice of North Carolina Sen. John Edwards as the Vice Presidential candidate on the Democratic ticket. John Edwards had been the last major Democrat candidate standing between John Kerry and the nomination - and there had been speculation that Kerry was reluctant to pick his former rival as a running mate. But, as the first joint appearance made apparent, Edwards was a popular choice that brings enthusiasm and energy to the campaign. |

General Wesley Clark returned to New Hampshire for the first time since the Presidential Primaries. He spoke in Manchester to a group of his supporters - and focused most of his remarks on the effects of the Iraq war on those who are fighting it. |

Clark went on to say it's a draft of men and women who have completed their duty - and now have to fill in caused by an unnecessary war. Outside the Manchester library where Clark was speaking, there was a contingent of Veterans for Bush. They said they weren't allowed inside and had wanted to speak with Clark about his support of Kerry. |

First Lady Laura Bush came to the home city of her husband's Democratic rival Friday. Mrs. Bush attended a G-O-P fundraiser in Boston-- the event was expected to raise between one and two million dollars for the Bush-Cheney campaign. Following the stop she was expected in New Hampshire at the Portsmouth Public Library to promote its summer reading program. |

Governor Craig Benson combined some economic news with a campaign message this week. At state Republican Headquarters, he announced that revenue from the business profits tax, business enterprise tax, rooms and meals tax and real estate transfer tax have all come in above plan. And he also stated that his own office was a bargain for taxpayers. |

The filing period for the Republican primary is over - but a group of dissatisfied voters is pushing for another choice. The group has organized a write-in campaign for State Senator Dick Green, a vocal opponent of Governor Benson. They have a website, www dot Dick Green for Governor dot com. The site criticizes both the Republican and Democratic choices this year as "Really Awful" and "Who Knows" - and promotes Dick Green as an write-in candidate in the Republican primary this September. |

Paul McEachern - who has twice been the party's nominee for governor - is now complaining that his opponent, Lynch, won't debate him. McEachern wants to debate Lynch once or twice a week up until the September primary in an effort to highlight the different choices that they represent for Democratic voters. Lynch has stated his opposition to an income or sales tax, while McEachern has proposed an income tax to pay for education. |
