Hello/Intro DNCReturn to index of stories... |
Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. The countdown is on. The Democratic National Convention is less than a week away in Boston. On Monday, D-N-C organizers unveiled the stage where John Kerry will accept his party's nomination for president. Rather than a center stage podium, the FleetCenter has speaking posts on either side. It's lower than in the past putting speakers closer to delegates. There's also a 90-by-17 foot video screen allowing people all over the country to appear in the convention hall via satellite. |
Kerry Bush PollReturn to index of stories... |
A pollster says this year's presidential contest is no "ho-hum" election. A poll by Marist College in New York out just a week before the start of the Convention shows a close race exists between Bush and Kerry. The poll shows 90-percent of registered voters surveyed think it matters whether George Bush or John Kerry wins in November, with 75-percent saying it matters a "great deal." |

Voters may care who wins --But, the 3 major networks apparently don't think political conventions make great TV. ABC, CBS and NBC will be offering only "minimal" prime-time coverage -- a total of 3 hours apiece for the 4-day events - from 10 to 11 pm. PBS, on the other hand, anchored by Jim Lehrer, will go from 8 to 11 all four nights-- you can watch that right here on New Hampshire Public Television. Joining us now to talk about the race for the White House are Bill Shaheen, NH chairman of the Kerry campaign, and Tom Rath, former state attorney general-- member of the Republican National Committee- and longtime Bush supporter. John Kerry and John Edwards in the "Limited" spotlight next week. Former Governor Jeanne Shaheen-- the National Chairwoman of the Kerry campaign will be front and center. Q BILL SHAHEEN -- you've got the inside track on that. What role will your wife be playing at the convention? Q TOM: Do you plan to watch? what will you be looking for? |
Bill & Tom Disc.Return to index of stories... |
Q President Bush campaigning today in 2 battleground states: IOWA AND MISSOURI with his twin daughters in tow. ** On Thursday night of the convention: the Kerry and Heinz children will play a role. TOM: Clearly both camps are looking to play the FAMILY card. Why??? What's the strategy behind that move??? Q POLLS have been variable. A recent TIME poll found that 43% of the public wants to see Bush re-elected. 53% want a NEW President -- BILL SHAHEEN: Why hasn't KERRY connected with the disenchanted? TOM RATH; Why does Mr Bush need to do to turn things around? ========================================== DO VICE PRESIDENT'S MATTER? JOHN KERRY SELECTED SEN. JOHN EDWARDS AS HIS RUNNING MATE! THIS, AS SOME REPUBLICANS WONDERED "OUTLOUD" IF DICK CHENEY COULD BE A LIABILITY FOR GEORGE BUSH. ========== TAKE SOT ======= Q BILL SHAHEEN: Edwards was named to the ticket early.presumably Democrats were looking for a month-long BOUNCE right thru the democratic convention. How BIG an asset is John Edwards? One republican analyst cited a 12-point bounce when Cheney was named to the Bush Ticket Q TOM RATH: There have been a lot of rumblings about DUMPING Cheney from the ticket. Even some in the Party like Sen Alfonse D'Amato have openly suggested the idea --floating names like Sec of State Colin Powell, and Sen John McCain. How likely is it we might see a change in the ticket? Would Cheney step aside for the sake of the ticket? Q BILL/ TOM: There's certainly a lot of talk about the IMPACT the No 2 guy might have on voters. But, in the end DO running mates make a difference? ============================================== THE WAR IN IRAQ CONTINUES TO BE THE LEADING ISSUE IN THE CAMPAIGN. PRESIDENT BUSH AND JOHN KERRY HAVE DIFFERENT IDEAS ABOUT HOW THE WAR ON TERRORISM SHOULD BE FOUGHT. ==================================== TAKE SOT ================= Q BILL SHAHEEN: So far MOST Americans support the Bush administration's handling of terrorism. The final report of the 9/11 commission is due OUT next Monday. How much of a political wildcard -- is the report? BILL/TOM: IF the 9/11 report confirms that the WAR was one of CHOICE, --NOT one of NECESSITY. How much of an impact will that likely have on Mr Bush's re-election bid? ** The report will likey call for an INTELLIGENCE CZAR What's John Kerrys response to that? Q BILL/ TOM; Amid all the political wrangling over the war, many voters wonder What John Kerry would or COULD do differently than the President? Q TOM/ BILL: John Kerry voted for the War against Iraq. John Edwards also voted for the war. So, if President Bush was WRONG in going to war --doesn't that make Kerry and Edwards wrong too? Kerry's now infamous quote: "I actually did vote for the 87 billion dollars before I voted against it" Q BILL/TOM: What about Michael Moore's "Farenheit 9-11" --a profile of Bush's handling of 9-11 before and after the event.. It's been called a "guided missile aimed directly at the presidency of George Bush." How damaging is the film. Will it sway Undecideds/ independents? MONEY Q BILL/TOM: President Bush's record fundraising has his war chest at 23O million dollars. How daunting is that? GAY MARRIAGE: Gay Marriage could be a defining issue in the presidential election. The Senate voted down a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. President Bush pushed for it, - John Kerry opposed it. Q Have Republicans cornered the market on the RELIGIOUS Values issue --as some pundits suggest? I've heard analysts say -- if a person regularly goes to church, mosque or synagogue they're likely to vote REPUBLICAN. Q Hillary Clinton won't be speaking at the convention WHY? =================================== Q Let's talk HAIR In making his VEEP selection, John Kerry claimed the Democrats had "BETTER HAIR" than their opponents. In TIME Magazine, a recent poll showed that Americans actually prefer George Bush's Hair to Kerry's 51% to 30%. Does Hair really matter in a presidential election. How imporant is IMAGE in this campaign? q President Bush plans to keep a low profile during next week's Democratic National Convention -- What is John Kerry slated to do the week of the August GOP convention? |

GOP PartyReturn to index of stories... |
New Hampshire Republicans held their own campaign events last Thursday night as well. Supporters of President Bush and Vice President Cheney came together at more than 100 parties around the state-- like this one in Conway. It was part of a nationwide event where Republican supporters rallied at thousands of similar informal grassroots parties across the country. The group in Conway enjoyed a conference call from First Lady Laura Bush-- any of the parties with at least five people were also able to listen in to the call. Mrs. Bush offered an update from the campaign trail and also thanked everyone for their support. |
