Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. Choosing a candidate for governor has been a complicated affair for the Democratic Party. At first, former attorney general Phil McLaughlin and House Leader Peter Burling declared they would run. But both dropped out in favor of businessman John Lynch. But the story doesn't stop there. As Richard Ager reports in this 2004 Votes profile -- the entry of a former nominee for governor has turned this primary into a fight for the soul of the Democratic party. |

Q DANTE: In the lead-in to Richard's report, we said that this is a fight for the soul of NH's Democratic party. Do you agree with that statement? Q ANDY: Last month, a WMUR Granite State Poll showed Lynch and McEachern with little name recognition -- Still, Lynch & McEachern have almost identical favorability ratings among likely voters. What does this tell us about the Governor? Q How important are favorability ratings in general? What's caused the erosion? Generally incumbent has the advantage -- is the Gov Benson's race to lose? Q DANTE: Paul MaEachern calls for doing away with the state property tax -- wants to replace it with a low rate INCOME tax based upon one's income to pay with exemptions so if you don't earn enough money, you don't pay the tax. Will that SELL among the voting public? It hasn't in the past? Q LYNCH has taken the pledge against a sales or income tax. Will this resonate with voters? Q ANDY: John Lynch -- is a self-made businessman --has personal wealth. Is he better able to give Governor Benson a run for his money? Q DANTE: What does a Democratic candidate have to do to win votes? Q ANDY: John Lynch: is for death penalty against state gambling Paul McEachern is anti death penalty, pro-choice & pro-gambling. Are those issues that factor in the race -- or is it TAXES and Education funding that dwarfs everything? Q DANTE: The latest poll by the Pew Research Center shows Americans concerned more about national security issues than about economic issues. That's the first time that's happened in an election year since the Vietnam War. Is National security an issue or factor in NH gov. race? Andy, your recent polled showed New Hampshire voters are concerned about something much closer to home. Are they also concerned about national security issues? Will this be a factor in the NH governor's race? Q DANTE: Haven't seen much in the way of ads for Gov Benson -- waiting until the democrats choose their candidate. Is that a mistake -- given his unfavorability ratings? Q WMUR/Granite State Poll: 24% of Republicans disapproved of job Benson did as Governor? That's a bit daunting? Q John Lynch continued his call to promise to repeal S.B. 110 if elected governor saying that the new insurance law unfairly punishes those who work and own small businesses. Benson supports it. IS this an issue that resonates? Q CHARLES TARBELL -- a bit low key. Education funding brought him into the race? How does he fare in polling? Q What does a John Lynch or a Paul Macheran need to do to UNSEAT Benson? Q What does Benson need to do to keep his job? Q Questions raised about Peter Heed's Resignation -- and whether allegations against him were exagerrated -- to get him to step down. Is that an issue that Voters care about? |

Finally, it wasn't politicians but a blast from the past that grabbed attention in Portsmouth last week. The tall ship "Friendship" sailed from its home port in Salem Massachusetts to the Isle of Shoals before heading up the Piscataqua River and docking at the State Pier on Friday. The ship is a reconstruction of a 17-97 three-masted American "East Indiaman" merchant ship. Photojournalist Steve Giordani takes us on a tour of the Friendship. |

The Friendship is based on a model of the original vessel as well as three paintings and numerous documents. The visit to Portsmouth was part of an on-going fundraising effort. |
