Hello/Intro Tom&JoeReturn to index of stories... |
Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. The Countdown is on to the Republican National Convention --it's less than a week away, it kicks off Monday, August 30th. Delegates from around the country will gather in NYC to nominate their presumptive nominees, President George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. As with the D-N-C in Boston, Talk of Terrorist Threats and protests will mean tight security at Madison Square Garden. Here to talk about the upcoming convention and what we might expect when the party faithful converge in the big Apple are: Joe Keefe, former chairman of the State Democratic party and Kerry campaign advisor and Republican National Committee member, Tom Rath. Q TOM: How will the Republican convention differ from the Democratic convention -- what kind of contrast will there be? Q JOE: Did Democrats get the bounce they wanted following the convention. What's John Kerry going to be doing -- when Republicans have their moment in the sun? Q TOM: Democrats were asked to keep Bush-Bashing to a minimum -- They did for most part, with the exception of Al Gore and & Bill Clinton. Will we see kerry-Bashing at the RNC? |

Let's Talk about an issue that continues to resonate on the campaign trail as we lead up to the convention: Senator John Kerry's Military Service in Vietnam. An organization known as "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" has launched an ad that they say -- tells the truth of Kerry's time as a soldier. The Kerry campaign has released an Ad responding to those charges: Let's take a look: |
Swift Ad ResponseReturn to index of stories... |
Democrats and Republican Senator John McCain -- a fellow veteran denounced the commercial calling it dishonest and have called on the Bush Administration to condemn the spot. Q TOM: Is this issue likely to surface at the Republican National Convention or will it play out in TV spots -- and on the campaign trail? Q JOE: The Bush Campaign claims they haven't and WON'T challenge Kerry's war record? Do you believe that? Q JOE: John Kerry's military service has been a BIG selling point -- are charges he fabricated his war record -- having an IMPACT? Q Kerry says he's happy to debate Vietnam Military service with him anytime -- Is Mr Bush likely to take the bait? |
Economic PollReturn to index of stories... |
Let's talk about National Security -- The latest poll by the Pew Research Center indicates that Americans are now more concerned about national security issues than about economic issues. That's the first time that's happened in an election year since the Vietnam War. War, terrorism and foreign policy were named as the most important issues facing the nation by 4 people in 10. Back In January, national security was Equal to economic issues in this poll. Q TOM: We all remember the catchphrase.its the economy stupid -- Used to remind candidates about the importance of those Pocketbook issues. Given this latest Poll -- what kind of message are we likely to see from President. Bush on National Security. Q JOE: Pres Bush has always polled strong on those issues of Terrorism and the War What will DEMOCRATS be looking for in the way of a counter attack on those issues coming out of the convention? Q TOM: What about the economy -- A barrel of Oil is at 48-dollars -- The latest economic numbers are not strong. What does President Bush need to do to convince Americans that they will be better off -- if not now, in the future? Q JOE: What do you think we'll be hearing -- about TAXES, Jobs and the Economy. How will the REPUBLICANS differentiate themselves at the convention? |
Guiliani Return to index of stories... |
Republicans will hold their convention a week before the 3rd Anniversary of the Terrorist Attacks which destroyed the World Trade Center killing 3-thousand. Rudy Giuliani , who was mayor of NYC at the time, will have a "prominent" role at the convention.Reminders of that fateful day will be inevitable. Q TOM: Any insights on what we might on that front? Q TOM: What are we likely to hear from Giuliani. Q JOE: Democrats have criticized Republicans for "Politicizing" the Terrorist attack. Guiliani says its perfectlly appropriate to EXAMINE what Bush or Kerry have done RIGHT or Wrong. Q TOM: The War on Terrorism, and the War in Iraq will no doubt be a part of George W Bush's acceptance speech on Thursday night of the convention. Violence continues to flare in Iraq -- the bodies of american soldiers continue to come home. What will we hear from George Bush on the situation in Iraq. Q JOE: What About John Kerry's comments that he'd bring troops home from Iraq within 6 months of being elected. Mr Bush says it sends the WRONG signal to the enemy. |
John McCainReturn to index of stories... |
Let's Talk about the ROSTER at the convention. Republican Senator John McCain will be playing a role. Q TOM: Both parties have courted this man for support -- But, he is a loyal Republican and has been out campaigning for George W Bush. What role will John McCain be playing at the convention -- and how PIVOTAL a figure is he? Q JOE: Do Democrats feel they still have a friend in John McCain? ============ Other STARS at the convention: Former Actor and current California Governor Arnold Swarzeneggar is likely to make an appearance -- Q TOM: Any thoughts on what he might bring to the table? Q JOE: Does that smart with Democrats -- given the Kennedy connection? CALIFORNIA But, the STATE DOES HAVE A "STEM CELL " RESEARCH INITIATIVE BEFORE VOTERS - PROP 71-- WHICH WOULD RAISE MONEY FOR HUMAN EMBRYO RESEARCH AT CA HOSPITALS AND UNIVERSITIES? |
Reagan/Stem Cell Return to index of stories... |
Stem cell research a big issue at the D-N-C. Ron Reagan, son of the late president, called on Americans to "cast a vote for embryonic stem cell research" when they go to the polls in November. Here's what he said: Advocates of Stem Cell Research often point to the late President Reagan's Alzheimer's disease to underscore what they see as a need to expand research using human embryos. Q Stem Cell Research has been a highly controversial issue -- But, one that seems to be resonated with the public. TOM: Will we hear any mention of this at the convention. Q JOE: Getting Ron Reagan to speak at the convention -- had to be major get for democrats. How does the Democratic stand differ from Republicans? Q Will Nancy Reagan be attending RNC? Kerry supports human embryo research |
Laura Bush Return to index of stories... |
First Lady Laura Bush will be front and center at the convention -- She's been actively on the campaign trail for her husband --and, recently made an appearance here in the granite state on behalf of libraries.. NH of course is a battleground state. Q TOM: Laura Bush will be addressing delegates -- what picture of her husband is she likely to paint -- and will her 2 daughters be speaking at the convention as did JOhn Kerry's daughters? Q JOE: When Theresa Heinz Kerry took the podium -- some analysts say she was a plus -- others suggested she was a liability for Mr Kerry. different spins. How important is a potential first lady, or current first lady's COMMENTS before a national audience? The Keynote Speaker for the convention will be a DEMOCRAT-- Senator Zell Miller of Georgia will address delegates on the 3rd day of the convention. Q JOE: Wasn't Senator Miller the KEYNOTE speaker at he 92 DEMOCRATIC National Convention -- that's got to be a zinger to the Democratic party? Q TOM: Any insights on why he switched sides and what we might here from Senator Miller? |
Barak ObamaReturn to index of stories... |
Barack Obama, a U-S candidate from Illinois became a star at the DNC. A virtual unknown to most of the country --he made a name for himself after his speech. Q TOM: Is there pressure on the Republican Party to feature an up and coming star in the GOP ranks -- a rising star like Obama -- and, if so -- any thoughts on WHO might "wow" us at the convention? Q JOE: Can rising stars Like Barak Obama steal a candidates THUNDER? |
questions Return to index of stories... |
1 TOM: Unlike John Kerry, George Bush and where he stands on the issues is known to the public -- so, will this convention be more about Re-Inforcing his message --or, can we expect to see a newly defined George Bush? Q JOE: Do you expect Republicans will be moving toward the center to appeal to those undecided voters? Q What would DEMOCATS want to see at this convention ---to make their job in electing John Kerry easier? Q Anything we WON'T see at the convention -- Q So much has been made of the RELIGIOIUS right and George Bush's support among that group. Will they be in the forefront at the convention? |
