Intro Andy/DanteReturn to index of stories... |
Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. The countdown is on to the General Election. Now that the dust has settled from Tuesday's Primary -- we have a clearer view of November's lineup featuring 4 incumbent Republicans against 4 political newcomers. Governor Craig Benson will face Hopkinton businessman John Lynch. Senator Judd Gregg will square off against activist Doris "Granny D" Haddock 1st District Congressman Jeb Bradley will campaign against Portsmouth Lawyer, Justin Nadeau. and 2nd District Congressman Charles Bass is being challenged by Concord Attorney Paul Hodes. To help us sort out the numbers, talk about trends and look ahead to November, we call upon Dante Scala a political scientist at the Institute of Politics at St. Anselm College and Andy Smith from the UNH Survey Center. Welcome. |
Intro Benson/LynchReturn to index of stories... |
We begin with the Governor's race-- where Incumbent Craig Benson says he'll run on a record of kept promises such as keeping down taxes and spending. His challenger, John Lynch says he'll bring integrity back to the state house -- where he claims scandals in the Benson adminstration have torn at the very fabric of the state. Here's what both candidates had to say to their supporters after winning their respective primaries. Q ANDY: Strong words from John Lynch -- alluding to some "ethical" issues dogging the Benson Administration. Is that likely to be a common refrain in the days ahead? |
Intro McEachernReturn to index of stories... |
Democrat Paul McEachern -- had a poor showing last night. He got 24% of the vote to Lynch's 76%. All of the candidates.said the statewide property tax should be "repealed" or drastically cut - only Democrat Paul McEachern supported an income tax to replace it. A platform that likely cost him a lot of votes. Q ANDY: suprised by the MARGIN of defeat for MaEachern? |
Gregg/HaddockReturn to index of stories... |
No drama in the U-S Senate Race -- Incumbent Judd Gregg, a veteran politician who's used to "running" --will be pitted against Doris "Granny D" Haddock -- a novice who made her name "walking." She ran unopposed and, Gregg faced no real opposition from Tom Alciere, and Michael Tipa -- who each got 4% to Gregg's 92%. Q DANTE/ANDY: Those numbers on target??? Q DANTE/ANDY: Sen Gregg's in Washington -- Doris Haddock ran unopposed. Granny D hit the ground running today in the Seacoast. Any guesses on how "Granny D" might FARE in November? |
Nadeau/BradleyReturn to index of stories... |
In the 1st Congressional District Jeb Bradley trounced his republican rival Bob Bevill capturing 90% of the vote. It was a "tighter" race on the democratic side where the winner, Portsmouth Attorney Justin Nadeau topped a field of 4. Nadeau says Bradley has forgotten New Hampshire during his two years in Washington -- and that one term is enough. Bradley says he has conducted dozens of town meetings and has made himself accessible to the people of New Hampshire. Nadeau says his main issues are bringing down health care costs, re-importing cheaper prescription drugs and adding jobs. Bradley was in Washington when the race was called. He told us by phone Wednesday-- his priorities for his second term would be winning the war on terrorism, strengthening the nation's military, stimulating the economy, and providing more accessible and affordable health care. |
Intro Shaheen/HounReturn to index of stories... |
Justin Nadeau is backed by party heavyweights such as NH's Chair for the Kerry Campaign Bill Shaheen. He also has the support of longtime conservative Republican -- Mark Hounsell. Q ANDY/DANTE: What does that kind of support do for Nadeau's candidacy? |
Hodes/BassReturn to index of stories... |
In 2nd Congressional District incumbent Charles Bass will face off with Concord lawyer Paul Hodes in November. Hodes says the 5-term Republican has voted the party line in Washington and not represented New Hampshire. He says if elected, he would work on changing the course taken by the current Congress and administration. "It has been an honor and a privilege to represent New Hampshire in the U.S. Congress and to work on the issues that are important to my constituents, such as increased funding for special education, affordable prescription drugs for seniors, and economic growth and job creation." Congressman Bass was in Washington Tuesday but released this statement about his win. saying: "It has been an honor and a privilege to represent New Hampshire in the U.S. Congress and to work on the issues that are important to my constituents, such as increased funding for special education, affordable prescription drugs for seniors, and economic growth and job creation." Q We keep hearing the familiar refrain.that the man in Washington is out of touch with folks back home. Does that resonate with voters? Q Bass is striving to be more MODERATE in a district that covers the western side of the state. Is that a good Strategy for Bass -- and if so, how does HODES counter that? |

Let's talk BLOGS. A blog is basically a journal available on the web -- typically updated daily -- with the most recent entries first. Dante -- is now in the BLOG business. It's called "Graniteprof" -- and it deals with NH politics and all things electoral. Q Primary TURNOUT Topped the blog when I logged on. Roughly 17% voted in the Primary. Sec of State predicted less than 24%. What do those numbers mean? Q Who benefits when we see such a low turnout? Q Where did we see heavy turnout -- and why? What about on party line? Q You say Republicans may have had a slight edge -- how so?? Q We have a tight Presidental Election -- what kind of impact will that have on NH races? Q ON the STATE LEVEL: 2 Republicans in the NH State SENATE have been turned out of office. Derry's Frank Sapareto and MIlford's Andrew Peterson.lost their GOP primaries. What was in play in those races that lead to that outcome? Parting thoughts. DANTE SCALA, ANDY SMITH |

voter turnout impactReturn to index of stories... |
With numerous visits to New Hampshire from presidential candidates dominating press coverage, several smaller races for state Senate have gone under the radar this primary season. But with voter turnout expected to be lower than usual this September, several of these races could be much closer than expected. Republicans have six state Senate primaries and one for Democrats tomorrow. One of them is in District 21, where three Republicans are facing off for the seat held by Democrat Iris Estabrook. A tight race has developed between Jim Boynton and Dover residents Matt Mayberry and Daniel Philbrik. Victory in District Twelve's Republican race -- where Harry Haytaytan, Paul LaFlamme and Joseph DuBois Junior are on the ballot -- is also expected to be determined by a thin margin of votes. |

assault weapons Return to index of stories... |
CONCORD, N.H. - Candidates in tomorrow's primary are split along party lines in their views of the federal assault weapons ban -- which expires at midnight. Congressmen Charles Bass and Jeb Bradley -- both Republicans -- oppose the ban. Democrats who expressed their views support the ban. |
