debates Return to index of stories... |
One more Presidential Debate to go, Wednesday October 13th. This week's first and only Vice Presidential debate produced no clear winner -- which left voters to turn their attention to tonight's debate -- the 2nd of 3. We taped this show "before" Friday's town hall debate in St. Louis so we obviously can't respond to who won or lost, but -- we can talk about the VALUE of these exchanges. Q Mike Pomp -- I know that was the subject on your TALK show this week - - what are voters saying?? Q In such a tight race -- are voters weighing debates more heavily? |
nader SOTReturn to index of stories... |
Noticeably absent from the Debates. Ralph Nader -- who is on the NH ballot as a third party candidate. He returned to NH this week drawing a small crowd at the University of NH. In sharp contrast to the huge crowds he drew in the granite state during the 2000 race. Nader called the 2 party system an electoral dictatorship. You can hear Richard Ager's full interview with Ralph Nader next Wednesday on NH Outlook. Q JAMES/KEVIN: Democrats still see Ralph Nader as a "spoiler" this time around -- don't they? |
Dueling PollsReturn to index of stories... |
Across the country, polls show the President and Senator Kerry in a dead heat. Here in Northern New England dueling polls show a picture that's a bit different. The American Research Group of Manchester shows Bush and Kerry both at 47%. THE WMUR Granite State Poll shows Bush up 5 points over Kerry. And James, you reported on results of the Maine-Becker Poll which shows Kerry with a 6-percent lead over the President. Q What are these numbers telling us Q What happened to Bush's momentum? Q Starting to see a lot more Kerry campaign visits in NH -- |
Fox / Kerry Stem CellReturn to index of stories... |
John Kerry brought in some star power for his campaign event in Hampton this week highlighting the issue of Stem cell Research. Kerry was joined by actor Michael J. Fox, who suffers from Parkinson's disease. Fox says medical advances are being hampered by restrictions on stem cell research because scientists are hesitant to go into an under-funded field. The Kerry-Edwards campaign has released a new ad which reflects the same sentiments. Q MIKE POMP/EDITH; Stem Cell Research -- is this an issue that resonates with NH voters? Q JAMES/KEVIN; The Hollywood Crowd has been out stumping. Micheal J Fox,.and Carol King making the rounds on Kerry's behalf in NH. Does this SWAY voters all? Q JAMES: We even had Former Vice Pres Al Gore in NH this week trying to energize Democrats to get out the vote. |
Rep for KerryReturn to index of stories... |
One question some are asking in the Granite State: are Republicans turning against Bush? A group gathered at the Statehouse this week releasing a list of republicans committed to voting for Kerry. The group is called the New Hampshire Republicans for Kerry-Edwards steering committe. It's chaired by Former State Senator Rick Russman and Rear Admiral John Hutson. == Q JAMES: The group released a long list of names. Is this a stunt or a real concern for the Bush Camp? Q KEVIN: How damaging is this to the Bush campaign? |
gov pollReturn to index of stories... |
Let's talk about the Governor's Race -- where The latest numbers show Republican Governor Craig Benson and Democratic challenger John Lynch in a "dead heat". According to the U-N-H/W-M-U-R Poll -- Both had 43% of the vote, with 13-percent undecided and 1 % preferring another candidate. Back in July the same poll showed Benson with a slight lead over Lynch. Q Kevin/Edith: What do you make of these numbers? |
Gov debates expectReturn to index of stories... |
We have some Gubernatorial Debates coming up -- the First in Manchester before the Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday. The Second Thursday in the North Country. Q Edith -- I understand you'll be one of those asking questions in Berlin? Q What are the issues specific to the North Country that are likely to come up? Q KEVIN/JAMES/MIKE: What do the candidates need to do in these debates to surge ahead? |

Now there's a call for an ethics investigation of House Speaker Gene Chandler. NHPR first reported the story of the thousands of dollars Chandler accepted at fundraisers and didn't report. Q KEVIN/JAMES: What's up with that? Q Are we likely to see some reforms when it comes to state law. It appears to be pretty gray when it comes to these fundraisers? |

d today. Each had 43 percent while 13 percent were undecided and one percent preferred another candidate. The University of New Hampshire poll was done for W-M-U-R--T-V. A different poll released one-and-a-half weeks ago gave Benson an eight-point edge, a slight lead when the margin of error was considered. The last previous U-N-H poll for W-M-U-R, in July, also showed Benson with a slight lead over Lynch, a Hopkinton businessman and former chairman of the state university trustees. new WMUR Granite State poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire shows Gov. Craig Benson and John Lynch tied for the Governor’s race with 43 percent support for each. One percent prefer another candidate and 14 percent are undecided. The poll of 579 randomly selected adults was taken Sept. 27 through Oct. 3. The poll's margin of error is +/- 4.1 percent. The race has been closing largely based on the increase of Lynch’s name recognition and favorability rating, according the poll. The last UNH poll of the gubernatorial race, taken in July, showed Benson leading Lynch 46 percent – 39 percent and 14 percent were undecided. WMUR will report these numbers on their 6 p.m. newscast. ---------------------------------- http:/www.politicsnh.com To be removed from this list go to http:/www.politicsnh.com and click email updates. ========== Democrat John Lynch strongly questioned Republican Gov. Craig Benson’s claim that the state is running a budget surplus, instead suggesting that the state was actually running a $2 million deficit. At a press conference Lynch pointed ought that while the state could be have a $16 million surplus from the general revenue and the education trust fund, Benson is purposefully not including an $18 million deficit in the state’s health insurance account. Last week Benson touted what he believed was a surplus in the state’s budget saying it was proof that he was holding the line on spending. “Craig Benson field to mention that despite his so-called surplus, the state had fallen $29 million below projections – creating a larger deficit for next year,” Lunch said. “When I’m Governor, we’re going to have an honest accounting of the bottom line and a budget that puts the people’s interest first. Craig Benson has failed at both.” Keith Herman, of the Benson’s campaign, didn’t dispute the deficit in the state’s health insurance account, but said that it cannot be fairly added into the equation because much of the loss is from the transition to a new way of doing insurance that won’t be fully realized for another 16 months. “After all of the numbers come in, you’ll find that there won’t be a deficit at all from these numbers,” Herman said. The state switching to self-insurance was hailed by legislators as a way to save $25 million, but has becomes more controversial now that it seems to be losing money. Lynch said that he hasn’t made up his mind whether he will keep the self insurance method or revert back to the old system, but he said that he would hire more qualified person than Benson has to administer the account. In response, Benson’s spokeswoman Alicia Preston said the problem with Lynch’s press conference is that he avoided discussing what he wanted to do. “When you stand up and complain about creating a budget surplus, about the state living within it’s means and not wasting taxpayer dollars, you make the clear statement that you would rather go back to the days of higher taxes and bigger government spending,” Preston said. |
