All this week, NH Outlook will be seen at 10:30 p.m. so that NHPTV may bring you a special presentation of The Civil War, Ken Burns' epic documentary. Monday November 15 Best Books Host Beth Carroll is joined in-studio by Adele Boeske of Derry, a children's librarian and author, and Jeff Smull from the Toadstool Bookshop in Keene. They'll have suggestions for gift-giving and reading pleasure. Tuesday November 16 Civil War Photos In 1862 and 1863, a Concord photographer named Henry P. Moore traveled to South Carolina and Georgia to take pictures of the Third New Hampshire Regiment during the Civil War. He returned with unique photographs which captured the awkward relationship between the white soldiers from the North and the black slaves of the South. Chip Neal brings us the story. Wednesday November 17 Middle-School Transitions For many students in rural New Hampshire, moving from hometown elementary schools to regional middle schools can be a challenge. We'll talk to the author of a new book on the subject, Donna San Antonio Eddy of the Appalachian Mountain Teen Project. She looks at the role social class plays. We'll also talk to two students who've made the transition and learn about some of the challenges they and their peers faced. Thursday November 18 Community Needs As the holiday season approaches, many area food banks and charities are seeking donations to serve their growing list of clients. We'll see where the greatest needs are in the state and show you how to connect to local charitable organizations. Plus, the Seacoast United Way recently assessed the needs, assets and priorities of the area. We'll get highlights of that survey. In-studio guests are Sue Donahue Suter, Executive Director of United Way Seacoast Chapter and Dr. Andrew Smith, Seacoast United Way board member and Director of the UNH Survey Center. |
