Hello/Intro TeacherReturn to index of stories... |
Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. How do you get kids excited about Math and History? It turns out humor and music go a long way. In this program, we'll look at two educators using innovative approaches to teaching. We begin with NH's 2005 Teacher of the Year -- who uses "graph master boogie" and rap music to teach Math. Randy Wormald has been teaching for 17 years. His students at Belmont High School affectionately call him "Mr Worm". Chip Neal sat in on one of his classes. |

It's no surprise that Randy Wormald is co-coach of the Math team. He's also taught in Taiwan and the Virgin Islands. As New Hampshire's teacher of the year he was automatically in the running for National Teacher of the Year. While he was not chosen as a finalist for "that" honor, Mr Worm is still TOPS in NH. |
Intro FolksingerReturn to index of stories... |
When it comes to History -- Jeff Warner's lesson is remembered "long" after he's gone. The folklorist and community scholar from Portsmouth-- uses "music" to connect students to the past. He likes to call it.teaching the history of "real" people. Stories you won't find in the text books. Using songs and ancient instruments Warner brings the history and culture of rural America to life. I caught up with Jeff Warner at the Maple Street School in Hopkinton -- where he was working his usual magic. |

Warner is part of the Artist-in-Residence program sponsored by the NH Council on the Arts. He's worked for museums up and down the east coast, including the Smithsonian. Warner says traditional music -- "historical music" -- is as close as kids can get to hearing the "sound of their times". |

Post Show LogReturn to index of stories... |
Tuesday, March 29, 2005: We started shortly after 5pm. We had to start over after the preshows. we wanted to check the lights/cameras on Beth because she looked "hot" on the record tape. We also wanted to check one of the preshows because the video looked blue. The rest of the program went well. We re-did the slate after the show to indicate we went a little under our normal 26:46 running time. We finished by 5:45pm. Director's Log: The tapes were not qued up so we needed to wait until they were qued. I need to make sure they are qued even if they are put on my desk. Also, the video for the interview in the folk singer pkg in the preshow was blue.Carl fixed it to make it less blue. But it was all set in the story. The audio seemed loud on channel one of Folksinger pkg. Need to check edit 4 record out. It may just be the speaker was too low in edit booth. I will keep en eye on that. We got out early at the end since we had enough of Jeff Warner singing. It made the show 25:52. Hopefully that is not too much of a problem. |
