Why kids are becoming overweight. A local school targets Junk Food!! |
Hello/Intro Dr. LynchReturn to index of stories... |
Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. As a physican, Doctor Susan Lynch has seen all too many "super-sized" kids in her medical practice. As the state's first lady, she may be in a position to change that. Children's health is a passion she and John Lynch share. So, when her husband became Governor -- Lynch took on childhood obesity as her cause. She certainly practices what she preaches. A self-confessed fitness fanatic, Lynch runs, rollerblades, skis and generally stays active. I caught up with the first lady at her Concord medical office -- where she was putting in her usual busy day. |

As for the dangers of childhood obesity, Doctor Lynch is taking her message on the road. One of her stops was the Park Side Middle School in Manchester -- where she talked to kids about making "healthy choices" in their diet. Most would agree.schools have become nutritional disaster-areas "fueling" the childhood obesity epidemic. |

20 years ago, 5% of American children were overweight. Today 15% of kids between 6 and 19 are overweight --and another 15% are headed that way. The state's Healthy Schools Coalition is fighting back with programs designed to improve diet and exercise among all students. In 2004, Rochester launched a new pilot program aimed at cutting down the number of overweight kids. |

Rochester is one of the few school districts where they've already eliminated junk food in school vending machines -- Doctor Susan Lynch says that's a good first step, but others need to follow. |

Intro Women StressReturn to index of stories... |
Stress -- We ALL deal with it at. onetime or another. A University of New Hampshire researcher is looking to put the spotlight on "women's" experiences of stress and trauma. Men and women respond to stress and trauma differently. Until recently, the study of trauma was based mostly on the experiences of men. Kathleen Kendall-Tackett -- a health psychologist at UNH and Research Associate Professor of psychology at the school-- is working to change that with "The Handbook of Women, Stress and Trauma." Kathleen Kendall-Tackett is here to talk about STRESS and how it affects women's lives. Welcome. Q KATHLEEN: In the opening of the book you quote Prof Higgins from the musical "My Fair Lady": "Why can't a WOMAN be more like a MAN? We all know -- we're just WIRED differently. **Give me an example of how WOMEN respond differently to stress and trauma? Q As WOMEN, we all know RELATIONSHIPS can cause us STRESS. Why do women have STRONGER stress reactions, to say, MARITAL problems. And, how is that MANIFESTED in our health? |

Tuesday, April 19, 2005: We had an in-studio interview to pretape at 5pm so we started tonight's show just after 4:30pm. The show went smoothly. We finished the show and the promo just after 5pm. We brought the guest into the studio by 5:10pm. All went well. We were done around 5:30pm. Director's Log: We have had great discussions about the tape hit problem and the consensus is that we are going to start putting our master pkgs on DVC-pro. The show went well, except for some reason the prompter computer has the Novell "printer" icon come up as if the printer is out of paper. The strange thing is that the prompter person did not print anything. Hmm. Also, the deko is having problems with the "share your views" and "web on demand" animated keys. They are not animating properly. I will follow up on these things. |
