Hello/Intro War dogsReturn to index of stories... |
Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to this Memorial Day edition of New Hampshire Outlook. We'll look at the history of the holiday in a moment but first, a story that truly shows how a dog can be man's best friend. When General Patton's troops hit the beaches of Sicily during World War II many had war dogs by their sides and canines have been used in conflicts ever since. If you walk through the Pine Crest cemetery in Barrington, you'll notice there's a memorial to the war dogs involved in American conflicts. Phil Vaughn first reported the story back in 2002. We thought it a fitting time to re-visit the memorial and the war dog handlers who helped dedicate it. |
Intro Memorial DayReturn to index of stories... |
Memorial Day is a time to remember all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country --but, when was this holiday first observed? In 2001, Chip Neal paid a visit to the Pine Hill Cemetery in Dover where Dave Watters, a gravestone expert and Director of the UNH Center for New England Culture -- provided some answers to the origins of the holiday. |
Intro Hall FlagsReturn to index of stories... |
Banners from every war fought by the citizens of NH are displayed in the State House. They hang in the Hall of Flags and are the very first thing you see as you walk in the main entrance. Age and deterioration now threaten the existence of the oldest flags. But as Richard Ager first told us in 2004, there is an effort underway to save them. |

NH Outlook May 30 - June 3 Monday, May 30 Memorial Day In this special edition, we explore the history of the Memorial Day holiday, pay tribute to canine heroes of war, and learn about the restoration effort underway at the Hall of Flags at the New Hampshire State House. http:/www.nhptv.org/outlook/ Tuesday, May 31 Seeing Seniors We continue our look at the future of aging in the Granite State. As the wave of baby-boomer retirees washes over our demographic landscape, we'll have to find more innovative ways to meet the growing cost of their health needs. One way is to keep people in their homes and out of expensive nursing facilities as long as possible. In fact, that's the goal of "Community House Calls," a Chester company that specializes in providing in-home support for seniors who need help. Chip Neal profiles one of many businesses starting to serve the needs of New Hampshire's growing elderly population. Also in this program, we'll take you to the 5th Annual New Hampshire Conference on Aging where Beth Carroll talks with Marie Smith, AARP's national president, about some of the issues the organization will focus on over the next few years. http:/www.nhptv.org/outreach/seeingseniors/default.htm Wednesday, June 1 What's Up in the New Hampshire Skies with John Gianforte Chip Neal talks with John Gianforte, an astronomy instructor with Granite State College and co-founder of the Astronomical Society of Northern New England.
