Why kids are becoming overweight. A local school targets Junk Food!! |
Hello/Intro Dr. LynchReturn to index of stories... |
Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. As a physican, Doctor Susan Lynch has seen all too many "super-sized" kids in her medical practice. As the state's first lady, she may be in a position to change that. Children's health is a passion she and John Lynch share. So, when her husband became Governor -- Lynch took on childhood obesity as her cause. She certainly practices what she preaches. A self-confessed fitness fanatic, Lynch runs, rollerblades, skis and generally stays active. I caught up with the first lady at her Concord medical office -- where she was putting in her usual busy day. |

As for the dangers of childhood obesity, Doctor Lynch is taking her message on the road. One of her stops was the Park Side Middle School in Manchester -- where she talked to kids about making "healthy choices" in their diet. Most would agree.schools have become nutritional disaster-areas "fueling" the childhood obesity epidemic. |

20 years ago, 5% of American children were overweight. Today 15% of kids between 6 and 19 are overweight --and another 15% are headed that way. The state's Healthy Schools Coalition is fighting back with programs designed to improve diet and exercise among all students. In 2004, Rochester launched a new pilot program aimed at cutting down the number of overweight kids. |

Rochester is one of the few school districts where they've already eliminated junk food in school vending machines -- Doctor Susan Lynch says that's a good first step, but others need to follow. |
