Hunted to near extinction.the humpback whale is now an endangered species. A glimpse of this graceful, and acrobatic marine mammal inspires "awe" in young and old. During a recent expedition to the South Pacific-- the Seacoast Science Center in Rye was given the opportunity to go swimming with these gentle giants -- and brought back some amazing pictures from Tonga. |

Here to talk about that trip and more, Wendy Lull, President of the Seacoast Science Center. Q Wendy: What is it about the whale that gives it that "CHARISMATIC" appeal. What's that LIKE? Unusual that you were able to get so CLOSE? Q You described this as an "Amazing personal connection with another SPECIES? Q How common are humpback WHALES in our area? Q Do we have much of a WHALE POPULATION off the coast of New England? Q Are there any feeding grounds nearby Gulf of ME? Q Do whales we might see off coast of NE.migrate to warmer waters in the winter?? Q Do whales tend to feed where their mothers taught them to feed.? return to the same feeding grounds Q It's been said: Whales serve as an indicator of the HEALTH of an entire eco-system. How so? ================================================================ Q How does ALL this APPLY to NH? Q How did this trip to Tahiti and Fiji fit into the Center's Mission? Q Are there similarities in the coastal habitats of our region with that of Fiji and Tahiti? Q EXPEDITIONARY Travel -- something New at the Science Center. Fundraising and FRIEND-raising? ** Gallopogas Islands inthe Spring Certainy have trips CLOSER TO HOME: THIS weekend: A trip to the island of Appledore -- to explore the historic Isles of Shoals. New Hampshire's been noted for having many first's, but did you know that the state can claim its own dog breed as well? It's a special breed of dogs called Chinook. Videographer Todd Ziemek caught up with Chinook owners during the 2005 Chinook National Specialty in Amherst and brings us the story of these nationally recognized K-9's. |

The Chinook dogs and their owners make annual pilgrimages to a different state every year. This was the first time the "Chinook specialty dog show" brought the dogs "home" to New Hampshire. |
