In the 19-70's Andy Cochran started his pottery business as a one-man band,
turning, decorating and firing pots by himself.
Cochran eventually settled in Dover and in 19-83 "Pottery by Andy" became "Salmon Falls Stoneware," a company that makes American salt-glazed pottery.
In this Making It in New Hampshire report, Outlook videographer Steve Giordani takes us to Dover where -- Cochran talks about making pottery and how his business has blossomed.

Salmon Falls Stoneware sells wholesale to shops across the country and to Canada and Japan.
The business did suffer a fire since our tour.
Fortunately, the October 2005 fire was contained to one kiln -- and Salmon Falls continues to operate as usual.

script iconIntro Menopause (2)
Return to index of stories...
Ah. Menopause! That roller coaster ride of annonying, unpredictable symptoms:
hot flashes, mood swings, memory lapses.
For most women --it hits anywhere between the ages of 48 and 55.
So, what's a woman to do? One suggestion: "When in Menopause. laugh! "
That's what 2 women with a creative flair are encouraging others to do.
Artist Wendy Hazen of "Wendy Hazen Designs" in New Castle and her friend Roz Davis-- a cartoonist and illustrator from Maine-- teamed up to create a new calendar to help women cope with the life change.
"The Upside of Menopause-2006" is a humorous look at menopause.
Wendy Hazen and Roz Davis join us now to talk about their new endeavor.
Welcome.
Q Okay. Most of us know the DOWNSIDE of Menopause -- You believe HUMOR is the
UPSIDE. How did this All come about??
Q ROZ/WENDY: HOT flashes. More than 75% of women experience them to some degree. I noticed AUGUST.spoke to that SYMPTOM.
Q ROZ/WENDY: Forgetting things.another common symptom.
Would that be DECEMBER?
Q ROZ/ What does JULY represent?
Q WENDY: Is this calender - auto-biographical??
Safe to say -- that if you DON'T get it.you're NOT there yet.
Q ROZ: Your Illustrations have a NewYorker feel to them.was that by DESIGN?
STYLIZED ILLUSTRATIONS??
** We've got some SAMPLES.Tell me what YOU were trying to convey?
Q WENDY: Men go thru a MID-LIFE crisis.Women go thru MENOPAUSE.
Have WOMEN learned to laugh at themselves and this CHANGE in life.
Jokingly referred to as " Middle RAGES".
Q ROZ/WENDY: What's been the REACTION? Is the market mostly WOMEN?
Do they smile in RECOGNITION.maybe feel a little less alone?
Q WENDY/ROZ: I understand you're EXPANDING the product line?
With BABY boomers IN or NEAR Menopause -- that's a sizeable market.
Hoping to TAP into that?
==================
SO the message is: Don't take Menopause so seriously.
LAUGH.
My thanks to WENDY HAZEN & ROZ DAVIS
Best of Luck to you.
