Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. There's one fact that we all live with - we're growing older. For many seniors that means change - for their bodies, minds and social environments. There's a comedy theatre company from the Seacoast that travels the state encouraging people to embrace the aging process. Its known as "Senior Moments" -- amateur thespians who perform at the Seacoast Repertory Theatre in Portsmouth. When "Senior Moments" takes their show on the road "laughter" is not the only response they look for as producer Phil Vaughn discovered in this Seeing Seniors report. |

Q - NANCY EUCHNER: - ONE OF GOALS OF "SENIOR MOMENTS" IS TO PREVENT SENIORS FROM BECOMING OR STAYING ISOLATED. HOW BIG AN ISSUE IS THAT STATEWIDE? Q- TOM& NANCY DONNELLY: YOU're BOTH ACTIVE IN YOUR COMMUNITY OF NEW LONDON - WHAT HAVE YOU OBSERVED? Q- NANCY EUCHNER: INDEPENDENT LIVING SEEMS TO BE AN IMPORTANT GOAL FOR SENIORS -- But, doesn't that SOMETIMES LEAD TO ISOLATION? Q- WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS OF SENIORS FEELING ISOLATED? DEPRESSION can't be good for health. Q NANCY EUCHNER: HOW DO WE HELP SENIORS STAY PART OF THEIR COMMUNITIES ? Where do you TURN for help??? Q- NANCY EUCHNER: - JOANNE MENTIONED IN THE SENIOR MOMENTS STORY THAT WE KEEP OUR SENIORS DRY, FED AND DRUGGED AND THINK WE ARE TAKING CARE OF THEM. HOW TRUE IS THAT? Q - NANCY DONNELLY - You're part of a group of women who knit for good reasons. You took a camera along to capture their thoughts -- let's listen in. Q- HOW DO WE REACH THOSE WHO ARE NOT PART OF A THEATRE OR KNITTING GROUP? Q THE problems only ESCALATE as the 85-and-Over population Increases. How do we reach out to THAT population? Q What about the very FRAIL. where do they turn? Q NANCY EUCHNER: What advice do you give families worried about a senior relative?? If a senior is listening -- and wants to get connected.what should they do???? Q TOM/NANCY: What needs to be done.that's not happening. One woman in the the theatre group talked about DOORS getting shut --- is that TRUE? Do we make seniors INVISIBLE. how do we get a community to SEE seniors in their midst.
