The State-of the-State address signals the Governor's first political speech of the
new year.
Here with some perspective on his agenda: Republican analyst Charlie Arlinghaus, and Democratic Analyst Colin van Ostern.
WELCOME.
Q CHARLIE/ COLIN: Overall Impression of Governor address?
any SUPRISES?
Q CHARLIE/COLIN: Governor's TONE & Delivery??
Q CHARLIE/COLIN: Covered a lot of ground -- a topic for everyone.
He took aim at the PROPERTY TAX --saying its time to ELMINATE it entirely.
WHAT are we to surmise of that reaction?
Q Lynch HIGHLIGHTED efforts to help New Hampshire FLOOD victims, get MEDICATIONS to the POOR, securing money for FUEL AID and SAVING the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. an OPPORTUNITY to tout ACCOMPLISHMENTS of his first year -- build a case for a 2nd term?????
Q Used Opportunity to talk about Turning Budget Deficit into SURPLUS without new taxes -- but called for fiscal RESTRAINT.
** but then asked the state to fund all but a 500 match from Communities affected by last fall's FLOODING. WILL he get that money?
Q Sounded some Familiar Environmental THEMES: Mercury Pollution, Ground Water Protection, LCHIP.
'' Don't let NH become DUMPING ground for Toxic Material" alluding to proposed burning of trash at a facility in his hometown of HOPKINTON
** Called for long-term state POLICY to protect Groundwater.
** Talked of his disappointment over funding for LCHIP
Does he have SUPPORT on these???
Q New THEME: Talk of a JOB Cabinet. Is that a nod to NH business ?
Q Biggest Applause Line -- when he Vowed to protect NH's FIRST-in-Nation PRIMARY. NO dissent on that issue??
Q Most emotional moment -- Michelle's Law -- calls for health insurance for students forced to leave college due to illness. Passed House, Urged SENATE to pass.
Likely to get his wish on this one?
Q Called for Statewide Summit on High School DropOut problem.
Wants to change law requiring students to stay in School til 18.
==================
BETH: Divided attention at the Capital -- the Supreme Court Decision on NH"s Abortion Law coming down just before the Speech. Justices handing the case BACK to the lower court with no ruling. Certainly the BUZZ at the capital. did it OVERSHADOW the
Governor's ADDRESS???
