Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. Healthcare has become so complex it's no longer possible for any one doctor or health care provider to manage the whole process. To get the most effective care, you need to become your own advocate especially when it comes to prescription drugs. So, before your next trip to the pharmacy you should make a list of all your medications, vitamins and herbs for your doctor. And, be careful with those over-the-counter medication. Doctors say: *don't mix antibiotics and calcium *don't mix cholesterol lowering drugs with Vitamin C & E * don't mix anti-depressents and St John's wort * and, don't mix grapefruit juice and medication. |

With any medication you should ask your doctor about side effects and dosage. If you don't understand, speak up, it's imperative. 40-thousand people die from medication mishaps a year, another 1.3 million are seriously hurt. Seniors are particularly vulnerable. They take "more" medicines, have more side-effects and suffer more deaths from improper use. In this "Seeing Seniors" Report, we look at Medication Management through the eyes of a Nashua couple taking charge of their family's health. |

TRK1: A year and a half into their retirement 65-year old Dan Hockadayd and his wife Claudia have a new job - that of caretaker for both their dads. TRK 2: their living arrangements are working just fine. SOT: claudia: the fathers are on the first floor they don't have to do stairs and dan and I are upstairs.everybody has their own bathroom…its important when you're old. yup:45 TRK 3: As for Claudia's Dad - Elwin - he's pretty independent: SOT: Claudia: He's realativly healthy for 86, he's a little bit more able to be on his own he doesn't need as much looking after as Dan's father does. TRK4: Dan's father Harold is in the early stages of Alzheimers - his health has been a bit of a roller coaster: SOT: DAN: When we went into dads apartment we found pres bottles from several years ago. there had to be 30 or 40 pres bottles there…there were about 12 to 15 in play trying to sort out which current which ones not **** 1:53:29 TRK5: That was only the beginning. DAN: after my father was out here with us about 3 weeks later he ended up in the hospital with congestive heart failure - TRK6: He was sent home 3 weeks later with still MORE meds. TRK7: That's when they turned to visting nurses and a telemonitor. - we have the telemonitor that takes his blood pressure and his weight -which is important - check in on congestive heart failure…and a series of questions will come across the machine. 1:41:52 Meds Tape 1 we also give them the paper record and confirm take numerous times once aging lists you can check oh yeah 1:42:05 TRK8: The nurses come at least once a week and check everything first hand. TRK9: Studies show that shortly after leaving an exam room - most patients typically don't remember half of what's said. Dan 1:13:25 MEDS TAPE 1 when you leave the hospital all you leave with is a bunch of prescriptions and / while they probably do explain to us what this does and what that does and they do say, this is for blood pressure, this is for diaretic, this is for you know whateverit is it's still kind of hard to comprehend and deal with it all at the same time. NEW Dan: 1:26:49 It's not easy…if you read the list of sideffects you wouldn't take any medication..we always read thru new medication and understanding sheet from pharmacy 1:27:07 3/4ths of those over 45 take on average 4 medications a day, those over 65 can take as much as 14 medications a day. Prescription drugs can harm as easily as they heal. For every dollar spent on drugs, and we spend billions, an equal amount is spent on complications from improper use. Most studies show that many patients don't know about common side effects, risk and dangerous drug interactions of the drugs they're taking - simply because they' don't ask. AARP/ THOMAS PHARMACIST TAPE; Lee: no question is too dumb.the only dumb question is the one not asked. 1:14:44 TRK12: Lee Carver, Director of Pharmacy Service at St Joseph's Hospital says you need to become an "expert" on every medicine you take and your pharmacist can help. AARP has launched a new campaign called "Medicines & You." It's aimed at educating all of us about drugs and how to become smart patients. Taking charge of your own health care was the message Dr. Bill Thomas recently brought to New Hampshire. He's considered an international authority on geriatric medicine and travels the country addressing the issue of aging and the wise use of pharmaceuticals. I sat down with Doctor Thomas to get his views on health care, aging and his latest book: "What are Old People for? How Elders will save the World." |
