We're coming to you from the Canterbury Shaker Village in Canterbury. NH's number one cultural attraction. The history museum interprets some 200 years of Shaker life. It's all part of our ongoing effort to take the program out of the studio and into your community. Hello, I'm Beth Carroll and Welcome to NH Outlook. In this program - we'll look at the Shakers, which represent America's oldest and most successful experiment in communal living -- and, also bring you up-to-date on NH's first "modern day" co-housing community. in Peterborough First, Let's check in with our guide: Shaker Historian Darryl Thompson He's at the Meeting House -- which was the center of religious activities. The 18th century Dwelling House --remains in-tact on it's original site. It was the center of Shaker home and social life where shaker brothers and sisters would gather for meals and to sleep. The Shakers built communities like this one in Canterbury to better serve their way of living. That same spirit is alive in Peterborough, where the state's first co-housing community is about to become a reality. Outlook's Richard Ager has the story of the Nubanusit Neighborhood & Farm. |

While the Shakers slept and ate meals in the dwelling house -- they worked in buildings called shops. This is the Dry House -- which houses the original workshop-where the signature Shaker furniture was produced. Q What are the hallmarks of Shaker furniture? ** pine or other inexpensive woods Q Plain and Simple: Form followed function? Q What kinds of finishes used? Bright colors used? dovetail joinery: characteristic of the furniture Q Shaker workrooms -- models of efficient organization? Q Most prized piece made? Q Original "Shaker" chairs costly due to the quality of craftsmanship. The early Shakers valued work, and often considered formal education to be an obstacle to Shaker growth -- but, that changed in 1823 when they built their first school. The School House was also used as the back-drop for a newly released short- film.based on a short story by Russian author Leo Tolstoy. Here to talk about the film, director Paul Schick. Q "Aly-o-sha the Pot." For those unfamiliar with Tolstoy's work -- what's the story about? Q You shot the film here in March of 2006 -- why Canterbury Shaker village? Q Is their a connection between Tolstoy's story and the Village? Q Were you aware of that when you thought of it for a location? Q I understand you shot an additional scene here at the schoolhouse? |

Weaving , like all WORK.was to the Shakers a kind of worship. Q Shaker Historian Daryl Thompson: They believed making something was akin to an act of prayer. Q What lessons can we learn? Q Their numbers are disappearing -- interest in their handicrafts and simple living - continues to grow. According to Legend: Mother Ann predicted there will be a revival when there are only 5 Shakers left. Will we see a resurgence? |
