Hello/IntrohealthcareReturn to index of stories... |
Hello, welcome to New Hampshire Outlook, I'm Beth Carroll. Health care is one of the top three issues for voters this primary campaign. And they want it addressed by the presidential candidates. But health care is also one of the most complex issues facing voters as they decide who should be the next president. Outlook's Phil Vaughn met a couple from Bow who got some help sorting out all the information about the candidates and their health care policies. |

Intro African Choir #1Return to index of stories... |
This primary season some children from Africa are using the power of song to raise awareness about the the issue of global health and poverty. In late October, the African Children's Choir performed at the State House as part of the ONE Vote '08 campaign. The non-partisan Campaign wants the fight against global health and poverty to be a key foreign policy issue in the presidential election. The Choir hopes its work can raise awareness about the plight of destitute and AIDS-orphaned children in Africa. Issue Advocacy is a big part of the 2008 campaign. Trained volunteers are frequently showing up at campaign events and asking candidates questions. Outlook's Phil Vaughn reports. |

African ChoirReturn to index of stories... |
TRACK: Since March the African Children's Choir has been in the United States Once Choir members have completed a concert tour, they will return to their homelands with the support, care and education necessary for bettering their future and that of their brothers and sisters. 00:11:09 ELSA CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT WERE THE WORDS IN THE SONG THAT THE CHILDREN WERE SINING? 00:11:15 The words were talking about festivities, in Africa people celebrate over food when they get the harvest. They celebrate over weddings. As you notice the children were dancing it basically just a celebration mood and lets just rejoice, were happy that we have food, one of the songs were about that the harvest you know. There are lots of places in Africa were people don't have food, when they harvest comes and they got food the rejoice and they dance and so that was basically just rejoicing. 00:11:40 WHAT DOES SONG MEAN IN THE AFRICAN CULTURE? WHAT DOES SONG AND EXPRESSING YOURSELF IN SONG MEAN? 00:11:45 It's like hope. Singing is like hope. Music is like hope to African people. They sing and that is their life. If they don't have food they'll sing and fell better. Singing is like hope to them. 00:12:00 NOW I NOTICED THAT THEY ARE WEARING WHITE BRACELETTS, WHAT DOES THAT SYMBOLIZE? 00:12:04 Oh that's what we are here supporting, the ONE campaign and what they are trying to do to bring awareness to United States leaders to the plight of Africa and what is happening. So the children know what they are doing and they are willing to be ambassadors and show that here we are. 00:12:19 HOW LONG HAVE THEY BEEN IN THE STATES AND WHAT HAS BEEN THEIR REACTION TO ALL OF THIS? 00:12:23 They have been here since March and they have been all over the place. Of course if you ask them what do you love most, they love the food. They love going to people's homes, they stay with host families. The love the traveling, I mean even coming to the state house, they have not been to this place and they had a little tour. All the experiences they get are just amazing. 00:12:42 WHAT IS THE MESSAGE THAT THE GROUP REALLY WANTS TO CONVEY? 00:12:45 The message is about hope. Each of the children that you have seen as a story, a sad story to tell. But when they sing they are like we have hope for the future. And so they are telling the world that no matter what their history's are there is hope for tomorrow. 00:13:00 THIS IS ABOUT FEEDING A STARVING PEOPLE OR IS IT ALSO ABOUT ADDRESSING THE AIDS ISSUE TOO? 00:13:06 Oh that is basically the issue. Some of the children we have are AIDS orphans. You know and despite what happening they say you know what we've lost parents, this is what's been happening but there is hope for African people no matter the AIDS epidemic in Africa. 00:13:20 NOW THIS IS TARGETED TOWARDS THE PRESIDENTAL CANIDATE? 00:13:22 Absolutely, so that when they make those decisions and everything they make them knowing what's happening in different parts of the world, especially Africa 00:13:33 ONE FINAL QUESTION, WHAT WOULD YOU WANT PEOPLE TO AT HOME, PEOPLE IN NEW HAMPSHIRE TO KNOW, A MESSAGE OR WHATEVER IT IS THAT YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT THIS VISIT AND WHAT THEY ARE TRYING TO CONVEY. 00:13:43 The mission of the African Children's choir is really hope. They children after they tour they go back to their home countries and they are supported throughout their educations and up until college. So they are saying we have hope. You know traveling the world, they look at these places and they want to be engineers and pilots no matter where they come from so I just want people to know and see them and know that these children have hope despite of what they have gone through. 00:14:06 AND DO THEY LOOK AT THE UNITED STATES AS THEIR FRIEND? 00:14:08 Absolutely. People have showered them with so much love. They think that everybody here has money. Everybody looks like they have everything, you know compared to what they have at home. But they know that people love them, when they see that response that people give them after they sing and just gives them more energy. 00:14:23 GOOD LUCK. 00:14:25 Thank you. 00:14:26 THANK YOU. |
