Hello, I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook.
This week our presidential primary profile series looks at Illinois Senator Barack Obama.
The democrat from Chicago is a former community organizer, civil rights lawyer, law professor and best selling author. He has been consistently second in polls of likely democratic voters.
I talked to the Senator about his White House bid. With just one term in the Senate, Obama's challenge is to convince voters that his lack of Washington experience is an asset not a weakness.

UNH Rally Tape 1 A/ 6:48:07
6:49:36 thank you wildcats… unbelievable welcome.
TRK1: Wherever Barack Obama goes - he draws huge crowds….and a sizeable press contingent. 6:51:26 Obama: I don't know what you guys did this weekend but I announced that I was running for the presidency of United states…applause…
TRK2: At 46, Obama is the"youngest" candidate in the field. The state senator from Illinois was a virtual unknown until the 2004 democratic convention.
Obama: 21:56:52 the hope of a skinny kid with a funny name who believes America has a place for him too, applause:03
SOT: 21:44:27 they would give me an African name, blessed in a tolerant country a name would not be a barrier to success applause 21:44:39
TRK3: His rousing call for national unity stole the show.
SOT 21:54:44 Obama: There is not a liberal or conservative America.there is not a black or white asian or latino America…there is a united states of America applause 21:55:00
TRK4: His message struck a chord …and made him a rising star in the democratic party. He was elected to the US Senate in 2004 and was quickly elevated to rock star status.
SOT Lynch: 1;21:13 we originally scheduled the rolling stones for this party…but we cancelled them that Sen obama would sell more tickets laughter and applause / standing o. 1:21:21
TRK5: and that was well BEFORE he announced for President.
SOT Kathy Sullivan: 1:23:37-:47 Sen barak Obama Obama: 1:24:14 NH I'm all fired up
TRK6: From the beginning his unsual name has attracted attention.
SOT /
SOT beth question -what do you make of all this?
10:08:38 Obama: you learn not to take it too seriously its flattering you are grateful you have this platform …to talk about things you care deeply about and people are willing to pay attention 10:08:55
TRK8: He's also picked up some high profile endorsements.
She can sell books - organizers hope she can sell a politican.
TRK1O: For a lot of Voters…the Iraq War is the "biggest" Issue in their choice for a nominee.
SOT: utube/Cnn debate / 4:33:20-:29 Obama: When I am president….before I comit troops….I will be honest with families making the sacrifice.
SOT; Interview tape: 10:09:58 Beth Question….you've talked about withdrawing troops…
10:10:06 keep in mind we've been there almost 5 years now.longer than world war 2 took notion that somehow we have not stuck to it… is belied by facts:29
what I believe not military solution has to be political solution. 10:10:35
10:10:48 so, yes when I take office I will end this war.bring troops home within 16 months we'll be as careful getting out as we were careless getting in
10:11:29 beth Q…how is your plan different than rivals?
10:11:35 I have been much clearer on timetable than sen Clinton has..I have also said that the only troops remain would be to protect embassies and al kahdai and iraq for example if they tried to see up a base there 10:11:55
sen Clinton seems to have a broader mission in mind for resididual force hasn't been clear pace with which she would withdraw troop

Obama is the first of the "post" baby boom generation to seek the White House.
As for getting there directly from the Senate only two others have ever done that: Warren Harding and John Kennedy.

A couple from northern California decided their dream vacation would be a month on the Presidential Primary trail here in New Hampshire.
Outlook's Richard Ager has their story.

The road to the White House has presidential primary candidates popping up at events all over the state.
Many of them are also making sure to stump at Concord High School.
As Outlook's Adam Donovan tells us it's all thanks to the school's "presidential candidates club."

Video Up:
TRACK: "A required stop on the road to the White House." That's what the banner that hangs at the front of Concord High School proclaims.
BITE: Emily, "this is our sign that the candidates come and sign - there are a lot of signatures."
TRACK: It belongs to the Presidential Candidates Club. A group of about 20 students who have been hosting candidate visits at the school for over a year.
BITE: Cooper, "All the candidates filter into NH and being the public high school of the capital we get to the opportunity to have these one on one discussions with the candidates. Which is really good for all the students here and the public."
TRACK: Cooper Waterman, a senior at the high school, has been an active member since the club officially started.
BITE: Cooper, "What we do is we send out letters to candidates inviting them to come and so far we've been extremely lucky. We've had more than 8 come in the last year. They come to the school, give a 10 or 15 minute schpiel about what their beliefs are and what they want to do as president and they open it up to Q and A from the students that come from class to watch and hear what they have to say."
TRACK: The students are led by English teacher Joanne McGlynn - whose been informally luring candidates to the school since the late 1980's.
BITE: Joanne, "But it's never been quite as big as it's been for this campaign."
TRACK: For the oh eight cycle - the club decided to make the banner.
BITE: Joanne, "We sort of cheekily wrote "a required stop on the road to the whitehouse" with a question mark at the end. Cause we didn't wanna act like that big shots that they had to stop here."
TRACK: But many of them have. Including Gov. Mitt Romney, Sen. John McCain, and Sen. Hillary Clinton. And they're not coming just because of the school's central location-
BITE: Joanne, "Concord HS is nationally recognized for having a required year long media literacy class at our school, all our juniors spend the year studying the various forms of media and as a result this is a wonderful experience."
BITE: "We are waiting for Congressman Kucinich - He's going to come and we're going to make sure he knows where he's going - lead him down the stairs."
TRACK: Dennis Kucinich was the most recent candidate to visit.
SOUND: Kucinich arrives: "Hey how are you?" "Thank you for being here." "I'm Eric, Daniel, Swaffi."
Enters building, Joanne greets him.
Wide of full auditorium. We hear Will announcing, reverse to see Kucinich entering/offstage. Sound: "Best choice for President. Dennis Kucinich!" Claps etc.
Dissolve to: "Hello Con-Chord… Thank you for having me."
TRACK: Kucinich did end up pronouncing Con-Kerd correctly the second time. The students quickly forgave the mistake, as they were eager to hear what he had to say.
SOUND: Kucinich, "By the time I was 17 I lived in 21 different places including a couple cars. I come as a candidate, but I also remember growing up the concern was a roof over head, clothes on your back, food on the table, health care. Basic concerns. Yes I'm running, but I come from a place that very few come from and get to in national politics…"
SOUND: Kucinich, "You in a seat right here. you have the chance to make history. Jobs. Health care. Education. You can rewrite history. Help me rescue this country. Help join us!"
TRACK: Following his campaign pitch - the students were eager to ask questions.
SOUND: kid from club, "WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO DO TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE BEAUTIFUL SNOWY DAYS SUCH AS TODAY HERE IN NH?"
Kucinich: "Well if you're talking about global climate change lets talk about it…
We know that global climate change is creating a melting of this ice and rising sea levels…
we have to take a stand to change the direction of energy problems in America. We have to move away from oil and coal and work with the world community to do this.
I'm ready to take America in a new direction and make sure that it snows in NH and other places at the right time of the year.
BITE: Kucinich, "I think they were very thoughtful and they were listening very careful. It's a measure when you go to a high school how quiet the audience is. It's a very thoughtful group of young people.
SOUND: "Can you sign this to my grandparents?"
TRACK: A perk for the club members - is the post event face time with the candidates.
TRACK: After the meet and greet, the Congressman ceremoniously signed the school's banner.
SOUND: "it says that the crimson tide shall rise in hope and love and reach for the stars above."
TRACK: Following the visit - McGlynn and the club members sat down for a quick debriefing session.
SOUND: Joanne, "So how do you kids think the event went today? What do you think?"
BITE: student, "I thought he was a really good speaker and he was very energetic when he was presenting all his points. And the moving around on the stage it really got him engaged in the crowd than other people who stand in one place and speak. And I thought it was really good that he did that. I think it helped and got the kids really into it."
TRACK: But what can't denied - is how invested the students are in shaping the future.
BITE: "there's so much written about how kids are disconnected these days. And I think you saw in the auditorium they really are connected. Sure a lot are coming because its nice to get out of class - but I had kids chasing me all week begging me for a seat at this event which happened the day before thanksgiving vacation."
TRACK: So Will Concord High School prove to be a required stop on the road to the white house? There are a few big names who may challenge the theory. Guiliani, Obama and Thompson have yet to visit the school. However, there is still time.
BITE: "What we do now is get the press coverage from this event and I will mail it to the remaining candidates and if its possible say - see you could get this coverage too."
TRACK: And this might be their best pitch of all…
" I think they leave here a better candidate than when they came. Because the kids let them see how significant their efforts are. I think that's what touched congressman kucinich today - I don't think he wanted to leave."
TRACK: For NH Outlook, I'm Adam Donovan.
SOUNDUP: "Thank you for the chance to be here…"
