Hello/ShaheenReturn to index of stories... |
Hello. I'm Richard Ager. Welcome to NH Outlook. We begin this week with a developing story. The co-chair of Hillary Clinton's national and New Hampshire presidential campaign has resigned. Bill Shaheen, husband of former Governor and 2008 Senate candidate Jeanne Shaheen, stepped down from his volunteer position on Thursday over comments he made to the Washington Post. In the interview Shaheen said he was worried that Republicans would have a particularly easy time going after Barack Obama's drug use as a teenager. Shaheen said, quote, "It'll be, 'When was the last time? Did you ever give drugs to anyone? Did you sell them to anyone?'" and "There are so many openings for Republican dirty tricks. It's hard to overcome."-unquote. Here's what Senator Clinton said Friday. Senator Obama said he doesn't think the American people are going to be concerned with what he did as a teenager. Rather, they're going to be concerned with what he's going to do as president. In announcing his resignation, Shaheen said he deeply regrets his comments and they were in no way authorized by Senator Clinton or the campaign. Clearly, this is political high season in New Hampshire. Before the Shaheen story broke, Boston Globe reporter James Pindell talked to State Party leaders about the presidential campaign as the primary date approaches. |

Following that interview, the Voter File controversy continued. In a media conference call, Democrat Buckley explained that the state Democratic Party database does use a voter list provided by the state, but adds other valuable information such as telephone numbers and past voting records. That added value, says Buckley, is what makes it worth $65,0000 for presidential campaigns.
