Hello, I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. More than half a million voters cast ballots on Tuesday. That's more than in any other New Hampshire Primary. But this was also an election where New Hampshire voters declared their independence. |

Various polling shots/sounds N1- They came out on Primary day in record numbers. Registered Republicans - Democrats -- and Independent voters. Arthur Barrett Poll Moderator - Phil - "Why the high turn out today? Arthur - Do you live in NH? So do I. Has your phone been ringing? So has everyone else's. People are stirred up and have become motivated. It's the NH way." N2-. For some people, the decision on who to vote for was an easy one. McCain voter - Obama voter - Huckabee voter - N3- For other voters, it was a case of wait and see. Trisha Bouthot - Did it take you long? Yes - I had it right down to noon…" Margo Burns - "I waited until in voting booth…" N4- The largest single group of voters in the state are independents. Registered as neither Republicans nor Democrats they make that decision once they're at the polling station. On Monday, Hillary Clinton was addressing supporters at a coffee shop in Portsmouth and became emotional when asked how she managed to stay upbeat during the long campaign. |

How important was the youth vote in deciding the winners on both sides? Many of the canvassers this time were young people, some coming from cities and towns and colleges all over the country. Why were so many young people involved this time around? We heard from a lot of young people who weren't quite old enough to vote. saying they'd vote for Obama. Why do you think he is so popular among so many young people? |

Dante, what was your overall impression of the election night speeches? James, where were you stationed Tuesday night? What is the role of an election night speech? Andy, from your vantage point at WMUR, how were you seeing the speeches? A lot of the candidates were speaking about how New Hampshire is just the beginning. how important is that message for the rest of the country? One of the things that is fascinating here is that many of the candidates were speaking as if they won. when in fact, they lost. Looking ahead to the other contests. how will the candidates need to shape their message for the rest of the country? James, you're off to Nevada next. |

Rough Script - Out of Staters They call it the New Hampshire primary But based on where these people are from- I'm from Chester CT Idaho Appleton Wisconsin - you wouldn't know it. "I wanted to hear the candidates and see what they had to say. And they don't really spend a lot of time in CT" "we never experienced and thought it would be a great experience of a lifetime." Some came to support the cause. "I headed to iowa on New years eve. Spent new years helping there. Flew straight to here. And ive been making calls, knocking doors to do anything I can to help get extra votes." While others wanted to find out what retail politics is all about. "people everywhere walking with signs it was a lot more involved." "you really see that they do deserve their first in the nation status." "you don't see this in florida cause the states so big." --Unlike NH. A small state, with only half a percent of the nations delegates. The most important half percent - a candidate can win. Why were so many out-of-staters involved in the primary? James, early on in our coverage you produced a program for us asking "THE" primary question, "is this the most important primary?" What do you think now? Given all the controversy over the date of the primary, what does the future look like? Is retail politics still possible in a flat world? Our producers and reporters met a lot of out-of-staters along the way. Many said they were here because there's nothing like what happens in New Hampshire. Do you think that tradition will continue?
