Hello/Intro WaltersReturn to index of stories... |
Hello, I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to NH Outlook. Legendary journalist Barbara Walters has been a fixture on television for the past 50 years. Quite a run for someone who never expected to be in the business. Over the years, Walters, a Boston native, has interviewed the world famous and the infamous. Now, she can add best selling author to her resume. Her new memoir "Audition" quickly shot up to number one on the New York Times bestseller list. She's been criss-crossing the country promoting the book and stopped in New Hampshire in May. Walters, now in her 70's, was in Portsmouth to take part in the "Writers on a New England Stage" program at The Music Hall. The sold-out event was cut short when a support beam in the basement cracked causing the balcony to shift slightly. As a precaution, the Music Hall was evacuated, it's since re-opened. I caught up with Walters before the event to talk about her storied career, personal life and the book that captures it all. |

Walters says she still has a lot of energy.but doesn't want to climb any more mountains. But, when asked what if Osama bin Laden called? Walters said, "I'll pack" my bags. |

Intro Lincoln BrigadeReturn to index of stories... |
Now a follow-up to a story we brought you 7 years ago about a controversy involving the Lincoln Brigade. There was a storm of protest at the New Hampshire State House over a plaque honoring the 3-thousand Americans who fought in the Spanish Civil War in the 19-30's. Recently a new memorial was dedicated in California honoring the Lincoln Brigade. Outlook's Richard Ager has details of the controversy in New Hampshire and highlights from the San Francisco ceremony. |

Video: State House Shots tape 01:26:10 good pan down from gate to State House Bite: Hearing Tape 1 29:00 To honor the Lincoln Brigade would be to dishonor the brave men and women from NH who fought and died in Korea and Vietnam - fighting communist forces - and would disgrace the NH legislature for all time. Hearing tape 1 26:12 The goal of this group was the victory of communist forces over those of Catholic Spain to establish a communist totalitarian govt. In fact, the parents of two of these so-called hero volunteers were the heads of the communist party in the state of NH. Hearing tape 1 00:01:50 Frankly, by 2001, I thought the cold war was over. Track: Senator Burt Cohen was stunned by the reaction to his bill. Hearing tape 1 03:32 Practically unknown by most people today, the Lincoln brigade showed extraordinary courage and truly heroic dedication to the principles of freedom, democracy and self-determination. They were above all, anti-fascists who took brave actions against the Nazi’s evil crimes while most of the world chose to look the other way. Track: Some legislators did try to adopt a historic perspective. Hearing tape 1 20:02 I look at this as the record of an event and it will list on a separate device the names of those NH men. And I think it’s purely that - history. Track: But others - a majority - simply wouldn’t tolerate the design of the plaque. Hearing tape 2 18:40 It has the upraised Communist fist and below it has the glove - totally dominated by the Soviet communist star. I don’t think this has any place in the people’s house. Placing this plaque with it’s blatant representation of a communist poster would be an affront to all those New Hampshireites who fought, were wounded, died or lost loved ones in the Vietnam or Korean conflicts. Video: Tape OL12 03:46:30 ** Artillery fire with good audio Track: The Spanish Civil War began in 1936 as the military, led by Gen. Francisco Franco, began fighting the elected government of the Spanish Republic. At issue: government attempts to limit the power of the wealthy and the Catholic Church Video: Tape OL12 3:47:15 Bombers Track: Franco was backed by Hitler and Mussolini’s forces, while the American govt. enforced a strict neutrality. Eventually, 3200 Americans defied American law to get to Spain, and fight for the Republic. Many were communists or sympathetic to the party. One of them was Abe Osheroff. Video: Tape OL12 3:48:08 ***Dreams and Nightmares tape 14:24 ** My passport was quite explicit - to go was to break the law. So I had to break the law - but so did Texaco which sent Franco 2 million tons of gasoline, and Dupont which sent him 60,000 aerial bombs, and General Motors which sent 14,000 trucks. For me, there was no moral dilemma. Track: Half of the American volunteers died in Spain - and by 1939, the Republican loyalists had lost the war. Many of the Lincoln Brigade veterans went on to serve in World War two, but their association with communism would haunt them the rest of their days. Hearing tape 1 22:32 The only good communist is a dead one! Track: After two days of hearings in 2001, the Senate committee banished the plaque to a state house vault. Soundup: Tape OL13 2:23:40 plaque has been put in a statehouse vault. Track: But that’s not where the story ends. Burt Cohen, no longer a state senator, went to San Francisco in March to see Abe Osheroff, whom he had befriended. The occasion: the unveiling of the Lincoln Brigade Memorial. We asked Cohen to take one of our small cameras with him. Bite: Cohen Interview Tape 00:07:30 It’s a beautiful monument and it is in a great location on the embarcadero. It’s 40 feet long, it’s onyx that the light can go through and there are great quotes on there and photographs of people. As we said not about honoring the people whom fight the Abraham Lincoln brigade so much as it is it telling future generations that it is really important to do the right thing and stand up against tyranny and to take personal risks. And this will continue that story for generations to come and I think that it is a great great thing. Bite: Lincoln Brigade Mini DV tape 0:08:11 What we have all created here is an antidote to amnesia. We need to remember the Lincoln Brigade, we need to remember why they fought. We need to honor their courage - their moral courage for standing up on a principle that was not necessarily legal. They stood up and they were counted. Bite: Lincoln Brigade Mini DV tape 0:12:52 I’m very honored that we have this memorial and this recognition - this ability to celebrate the living legacy of 11 heroes here in the city of San Francisco. Track: San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom dismissed any talk about communist affiliation. Bite: Lincoln Brigade Mini DV tape 0:21:55 I move away from that kind of controversy and talk about the heroism of the time, the fact that people stood up against fascism is something that should be recognized, regardless of ideology. The fact is, they stood up, they stepped up, and a lot of us talked about the way the world should be and these guys made it so. That’s what it’s all about. Track: Several dignitaries spoke or attended, including former Secretary of State George Schultz. But it was the words of the Spanish ambassador that some cherished the most. Bite: Lincoln Brigade Mini DV tape 0:15:58 The people of Spain will never forget those generous Americans who offered their blood for the cause of liberty in our country. Bite: Lincoln Brigade Mini DV tape 0:16:32 We lost the battle - we democrats lost the battle, but finally, we have won the war. Long live the memory of the Lincoln Brigade. Thank you very much. Bite: Lincoln Brigade Mini DV tape 0:23:19 ** Peter - how did this compare with what happened in NH? “A big difference.” Track: Though the San Francisco memorial is a great honor, Abe Osheroff wanted to know if anything could be done to bring the New Hampshire plaque out of its vault. Track: Osheroff gave a short rousing speech to the crowd, concluding by saying…. Bite: Lincoln Brigade Mini DV tape 0:19:45 Thank you for making us veterans immortal. Track: Thank you for making us veterans immortal. A week later, Abe Osheroff died - along with two other Lincoln Brigade veterans. Bite: Cohen Interview Tape 00:09:41 WHAT’S THE LESSON HE LEFT WITH YOU? Bite: Cohen Interview Tape 00:09:42 Well its ok to personal risk and sometimes its good to take personal risks. I haven’t pleased all the people all the time with my political actions and I have raised controversy from time to time but I feel really good about if its true my conscience I got to do that and to move the ball forward to sacrifice and often time its personal sacrifice but sometimes you go to do that and I think it is very important to teach our children. I have could kids and I hope they learn from that and I hope future generation learns from that. I think the controversy back in 2001 raised more consciousness about the Lincoln brigade and about the Spanish civil war then I ever thought was possible, I have no regrets. Track: For NH Outlook, I’m Richard Ager. |
