Here to help us sort it out. Senator Lou D'Allesandro, a longtime proponent of expanded gambling, Jim Demers a former state representative and current lobbyist for Millennium Gaming which hopes to bring slots to Rockingham Park,
Those arguing against it: State Representative Dave Hess, the Deputy Republican leader, and Mike Marsh, a former lawmaker and private investor.
Welcome.
Q Sen D'Allesandro: What proposals are on the table this session?
Q Rep House: Senate came close to passing a gambling bill last year, but the HOUSE has always been RESISTANT to the idea. WHY?
Q Mike Marsh: What is your OBJECTION to expanded gambling. NH is losing revenue to CT and RI that have casinos. Can NH afford NOT to consider casinos or video slots?
Q JIM: Why are slot machines the solution to the state's fiscal problems?
Will hard times mean good times for expanded gambling supporters?
Q from a cost benefit analysis.what would expanded gambling mean to NH
Q If and when MA opens an Indian Casino -- what impact would that have on NH & projected revenues. Can gambling revenues save NH's economy - are slots a safe bet - or a house of cards ready to collapse?
Q Once door is open to expanded gambling -- it's not likely lawmakers would reconsider down the road no matter how much economic conditions improved?
Q A mistake to rush to embrace expanded gambling because of short term budget problems?
Q Is the industry is looking to capitalize on badly bruised economies?
Q If State were to approve casinos or video slots during hard economic times -- wouldn't that put them in the position of encouraging citizens with shrinking incomes to gamble. If Massachusetts legalizes slot machines, that would cut into New Hampshire's profits.
q Hinsdale race track declared bankruptcy --some might argue that its an industry in decline. saturated market, if you will.
Q JIM: If Hinsdale couldn't raise enough capital to stay open, why would Rockingham be any different? And, why should they be given a monoploy to use slots?
Q MIKE/DAVE: What about the argument that without slots, tracks are doomed to disappear because live racing is no longer profitable.
q
Q LOU: Slot machine revenues are off by more than 6 percent at Connecticut's casinos, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, in the five months ending Jan. 31, compared to a year ago. For Mohegan Sun, the downturn is its first after more than a decade of steady growth
Q Berlin is looking for economic development.supports a casino. Not much support in Legislature.WHY not?
Q Gov. John Lynch has repeatedly said he would not support expanding gambling without proof it would not harm the state's quality of life. What chance of it being veto-proof?
We are already smoking and gambling to support education."
Q Public Perceptions: No wonder about 70% of Americans believe that legalized gambling encourages people to gamble more than they can afford, according to a Pew Research Center survey in 2006. That's a noteworthy increase from 1989, when 62% expressed that concern in a Gallup survey.
An American Research Group Survey. showed broad support for video slots at the racetracks. 46%
Total sample 46% 36% 18%
Q How is state lottery different than video slots??
From the wall street journal.
68% don;t mind expanding gambling a recent polls.
Outlays at casinos have plunged, stock prices of gambling enterprises have collapsed and new building projects around the world are frozen. Native American casinos are laying off workers from Connecticut to California. State lotteries, too, have been reporting hefty declines in ticket sales -- despite the fact that lotteries were sold to voters as a sure way to fund education programs even in hard times.
Also to blame for the uptick in antigambling sentiment is the industry's poor record as an economic multiplier. In locale after locale, citizens are realizing that they were snookered by politicians' promises that casinos would provide a problem-free explosion in jobs and income from tourism. Three casinos have opened in Detroit, for example, but the city looks as desiccated as ever, and one of the operators is embroiled in bankruptcy court.
Opponents point to a drain on restaurants and other small businesses that compete with casinos; more traffic and other disruptions i
expanded gambling enhances tourism.rooms and meals taxes.etc. Don't these facilities.siphon off customers.
Will lawmakers roll the dice on expanded gambling.
A recent University of New Hampshire poll showed that 68 percent of residents don't mind expanding gambling
