Hello, I'm Richard Ager. Welcome to NH Outlook. In late March, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner unveiled a plan to cleanse the country's largest banks of toxic assets. Under the Public Private Investment Plan government and private investors will buy up to a trillion dollars worth of real estate related loans and securities, including the so-called toxic assets. Outlook's Phil Vaughn talked with NH's Banking Commissioner, Peter Hildreth about the plan and what it could mean for the people of New Hampshire. |

The Obama administration has promised to take action on climate change, though their plan has not yet been released. Among the ideas being considered is cap and trade, a system in which existing power plants could pay for future rights to pollute. That would be a huge mistake according to climatologist Dr. James Hansen, V/O: Hansen spoke to an audience of legislators and activists at the State House last week. He said the Earth has already passed the safe level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and needs to cut back its carbon consumption, including a ban on all coal-burning plants. Hansen is a prominent research scientist for NASA,, and his views became widely known when the George W. Bush Administration tried to suppress his findings that global warming is a reality. |

One more climate calculation by Dr. Hansen. If we keep consuming fossil fuels at the current rate, we could end up with an ice-free world - in which the oceans have risen by 250 feet. |

Last December, I talked with a leading allergist about treatments --and then went food shopping with a local family. As you'll see, it takes a lot of effort to know what's safe to put on a plate. |

One newer approach - still in the experimental stage - is administering tiny - but gradually increasing - amounts of the allergen such as peanuts - to the allergic child. One study at Duke University showed a decrease in sensitivity following that treatment. |
