Hello. I'm Richard Ager. Welcome to NH Outlook. On this week's program, we will look at two controversial bills that have already passed the Senate and face a vote very soon in the Senate. The first bill would legalize the medical use of marijuana as prescribed by a physician. We'll look at both sides of the issue in a moment but first, let's hear some of the testimony given the Senate Health and Human Services Committee on the issue. SOTS: GUESTS: |

SOT: 8:40:07 This is an non-addicting drug - non-addicting - that has never been fatal to anybody that is known in our record. And it's safe, and I can't prescribe it. All I can do is recommend it. 9;06:20 I can tell you people under the influence get into car accidents, and are involved in crimes all the time. And I can also tell you that marijuana is a problem in NH - and to think you can say - where can I get some marijuana - ask your kids - that's appalling to me. |

THE PROSPECT OF GAY MARRIAGE HAS TO BE ONE OF THE MOST SURPRISING DEVELOPMENTS IN RECENT TIMES. JUST FIVE YEARS AGO, A STATE COMMISSION RECOMMENDED THAT MARRIAGE BE DEFINED AS BEING ONLY BETWEEN A MAN AND A WOMAN, EVEN THOUGH FEDERAL LAW ALREADY DEFINES IT AS SUCH. NOW, A BILL BEFORE THE SENATE COULD HAVE NEW HAMPSHIRE JOIN VERMONT AND IOWA AS THE LATEST TO ALLOW SAME-SEX MARRIAGE. JOINING ME ARE THE PRIME SPONSOR OF THE BILL, REP. JIM SPLAINE. AND KEVIN SMITH, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF CORNERSTONE POLICY RESEARCH. |

Finally, this week, there was a special election in Senate district three to fill the vacancy left by Republican William Denley, who resigned the Senate following a charge of DUI. The race was between Democrat Bud Martin and Republican Jeb Bradley - who served in Congress for two terms. V/O Rainy weather and little publicity likely kept the number of voters down, but nearly 10,000 did show up at the polls. Bradley won easily with more than 60% of the vote. Both candidates said they were running on economy issues, with Bradley supporting across the board cuts while Martin preferred targetted cuts. Some voters also pointed to social issues such as gay marriage as being decisive in their votes. Less than an hour after the polls closed, Jeb Bradley was ready to declare victory - and end speculation that he is simply getting ready to run for higher office. |
