Hello, I'm Richard Ager and welcome to NH Outlook. As winter wears on, and our thoughts turn to spring, many of us begin planing for a healthy garden and lawn. But an increasing number of homeowners are concered about they see as a toxic reliance on lawn herbicides and pesticides. That's the focus of a legislative hearing this week that could lead to banning those chemicals anywhere children gather. We'll discuss the issues involved in just a moment but first, some of what legislators heard and said.

Joining me in the Political Library at the State Library in Concord are: Paul Tukey, Author and Film Maker who made the documentary A Chemical Reaction; Lorraine Merrill, Commissioner of the NH Dept. of Agriculture; Representitive Suzanne Smith, Sponsor of the HB 1456 which would establish a study committee on lawn care pesticides; and Alan Eaton an Entymologist with UNH Cooperative Extension. Welcome all.
1: SUZANNE SMITH, I'LL START WITH YOU. YOUR BILL SEEMS INTENT ON BANNING PESTICIDES WHEREVER "CHILDREN CONGREGATE". THAT'S A LOT OF PLACES.
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO "SAFE WHEN PROPERLY APPLIED"?
2: THIS IS AIMED AT PESTICIDES AND HERBICIDES. WHAT ABOUT THE PESTS? AND THE NOXIOUS PLANTS? DO YOU THINK THIS WILL ONLY AFFECT ORNAMENTAL PLANTS?
3: WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES? DO THEY WORK? WOULD LAWN CARE PROFESSIONALS
4: PAUL TURLEY - YOU WORKED IN THE INDUSTRY. YOU SOLD THE PRODUCTS AND APPLIED THEM. WHAT TURNED YOU AROUND?
5: YOU BELIEVE THERE ARE ALTERNATIVES AND WROTE "THE ORGANIC LAWN CARE MANUAL". SO - HOW DO YOU ORGANICALLY GET RID OF DANDELIONS - AND GRUBS?
6: ALAN EATON - YOU COORDINATE THE INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT PROGRAM - THAT'S DESIGNED TO MINIMIZE THE USE OF TOXIC CHEMICALS - WHERE DO THE PESTICIDES AND HERBICIDES FIT IN?
AT SAFELAWNS.ORG - YOUR WEBSITE - YOU ENDORSE VARIOUS PIECES OF LAWN EQUIPMENT, DISPLAY THE LOGOS OF YOUR SPONSORS -
7: PAUL, YOU'RE FROM MAINE BUT YOU CHOSE THE STORY OF HUDSON, QUEBEC TO TELL. THAT CASE WENT ALL THE WAY TO CANADA'S SUPREME COURT IN 2001 - AND THE TOWN WON, KEEPING ITS BAN ON LAWN CHEMICALS DESPITE INDUSTRY OPPOSITION. WAS THAT A SURPRISE.
TOWN WAS SUED BY THE BIGGEST LAWN CARE COMPANY - CHEMLAWN - NOW TRUGREEN.
8; THE ENTIRE PROVINCE OF QUEBEC - OUR NEIGHBOR -NOW BANS THE SALE OF LAWN CHEMICALS. THE TOWN OF MARBLEHEAD BANS THEIR USE ON TOWN LAND.
COULD IT HAPPEN HERE?
9: WHAT ABOUT THE FACT THAT FRUITS AND VEGETABLES THAT ARE BLEMISHED BY PESTS ARE WORTH MUCH LESS - OFTEN HAVE TO BE DISCARDED?
10: SUZANNE SMITH - AS A HOMEOPATH AND NUTRITIONIST, DO YOU SEE ANY ROLE FOR PESTICIDES OR HERBICIDES?
11: THE BLOOM IN CHESAPEAKE BAY, GULF OF MEXICO - THESE ARE SEEN FROM SPACE. WOULDN'T THIS HELP?
12: THERE ARE A NUMBER OF ACTIVISTS HERE IN NH - THE LEAH COLLECTIVE AMONG THEM -
13; WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THIS PIECE OF LEGISLATION?
