HELLO. I'M RICHARD AGER, WELCOME TO NH OUTLOOK. WHEN WE TRY TO ESTIMATE THE COST OF THE WARS IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN, WE OFTEN OVERLOOK A TOLL THAT HAS BEEN LARGELY HIDDEN, BUT IS NOW BECOMING VERY EVIDENT. THAT IS, THE NUMBER OF VETERANS WHO COME HOME SUFFERING FROM A TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY. JOINING ME AT THE STATE LIBRARY IN CONCORD ARE:

JOINING ME AT THE STATE LIBRARY IN CONCORD ARE:
1: RETIRED ARMY SNIPER SERGEANT ANDREW REEVES
2: DR. LANIER SUMMERALL, ACTING CHIEF OF MENTAL HEALTH AT THE VA HOSPITAL IN WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, VT.
3: DR. THOMAS MCLASLLISTER M.D - DIRECTOR OF NEUROPSYCHIATRY AT DARTMOUTH-HITCHCOCK MEDICAL CENTER
4: AND BUD ELKIN, PRESIDENT OF THE NH BRAIN INJURY ASSOCIATION - AND A CERTIFIED SPECIALIST IN BRAIN INJURY.
WELCOME ALL.
1: BUD - YOU WROTE A PRESENTATION YOU GIVE WITH THE TITLE: "OUR RETURNING VETERANS, ARE WE READY." ARE WE?
2: SGT. ANDREW REEVES -
YOU SERVED AS A SNIPER FOR 18 MONTHS IN IRAQ - AND WERE EXPOSED TO SEVERAL IEDS - THE IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICES. DESCRIBE THE LAST - AND MOST SERIOUS -ATTACK ON YOU.
YOU CAME HOME - TO SAN DIEGO - IN 2005. WHAT CONDITION WERE YOU IN - AND WHAT TREATMENT WAS AVAILABLE?
3: DR. SUMMERAL - CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL ESTIMATE ABOUT ONE OF EVERY 175 PERSONS WILL SUFFER A TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY. THE MILITARY ESTIMATE ONE IN TEN. CLEARLY A VULNERABLE POPULATION.
4: DR. MCALLISTER - WE SHOULD MAKE SOME BASIC DISTINCTIONS HERE. THERE ARE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF BRAIN INJURY INVOLVED. IS IT DIFFICULT TO DIAGNOSE - IS IT CONFUSED WITH PTSD - POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER?
5: ANDREW REEVES - YOU'VE SAID YOU HAD NO REAL TREATMENT - FOR 5 YRARS - EVERY DOCTOR HAD DIFFERENT ADVICE?
6: DR. SUMMERAL - IT WASN'T UNTIL 2008 THAT THE ARMY BEGAN SCREENING ANYONE CAUGHT WITHIN 180 FEET OF A BLAST ZONE. WHY SO LONG? DOES IT CATCH EVERYONE?
7: BUD ELKIN, YOU SAY VETERANS WITH BRAIN INJURIES WILL HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THINKING, MEMORY, ATTENTION - AND WILL OFTEN ENGAGE IN HIGH-RISK BEHAVIOR, ANGER AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE.
Seizure activity. Disorientation Tinitus and feelings of Isolation
YOU ALSO POINT OUT THAT PATIENTS WITH MILD TO MODERATE TBI ARE ACTUALLY MUCH MORE AFFECTED BY THEIR EMOTIONAL DIFFICULTIES THAN BY THEIR PHYSICAL DISABILITY.
8: ANDREW REEVES - YOU NOW HAVE A WIFE AND TWO CHILDREN AND A GOOD JOB AS A CONSULTANT WITH A COMPANY IN SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE. YET YOU TOLD ME THAT WHEN YOU CAME HOME, IT WAS LIKE RELIVING YOUR WORST EXPERIENCE EVERY DAY. HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?
9: DR. MCALLISTER - ARE MOST PATIENTS AWARE THEY HAVE A PROBLEM?
will fully recover with no long-term effects. Evaluation at or near the time of injury is important to be able to identify if there are symptoms that do not go away and may indicate either more severe injury or permanent injury to the brain.
10: ANDREW REEVES - YOU WERE A MEMBER OF AN ELITE MILITARY UNIT CARRYING OUT DANGEROUS AND DIFFICULT TASKS - HOW HARD WAS IT TO ADMIT YOU HAD A PHYSICAL PROBLEM?
IS THERE ANY ATTEMPT IN THE ARMY TO EDUCATE SOLDIERS THAT BEING INJURED IS NOT COWARDICE.
"AT THE POINT OF ACCEPTANCE, IT WAS TOO LATE TO SAVE MY MILITARY CAREER".
11: DR. MCALLISTER AND DR. SUMMERALL - DO YOU HAVE RELUCTANT PATIENTS - IN DENIAL?
12: BUD - WHAT HELP IS THEIR FOR FAMILIES IN UNDERSTANDING HOW TO LIVE WITH TBI?
WHAT ABOUT VOCATIONAL ASSISTANCE?
13: THERE ALSO SEEMS TO BE A DISCONNECT BETWEEN THE MILITARY AND CIVILIAN AGENCIES.
I SPOKE TO THE ADMINSTRATOR OF SEVERAL INDEPENDENT LIVING HOMES IN NH. SHE HAS ATTENDED MILITARY-CIVILIAN COOPERATION CONFERENCES - THE NEXT IS LATER THIS MONTH -BUT SHE SAYS NO ONE FROM THE MILITARY HAS EVER REACHED OUT TO HER ORGANIZATION - THOUGH THEY EXHIBIT AT THESE CONFERENCES. IS THIS A CULTURAL PROBLEM?
"Military is trying to keep its injuries in house -But military isn't equipped to find a place for veterans to re-integrate with community".
14: LAST COMMENT - THE FUTURE FOR RETURNING VETERANS WITH TBI? ADVICE FOR VETERANS?
