14:08.25…… I thought this was almost a no brainer. The kind of research I do would be interesting for students it uses space age technology, Earth orbiting satellites, all the things Christa had in her dreams, from space and learning about the earth from space.
Soundup: LPA 402 1:30:50 ** collecting samples at Mt. Mooselauk
Track: For more than 20 years, thousands of Forest Watch students from 300 schools have been monitoring the health of white pine forests in New England and mid-Atlantic states.
Bite: LPA 402 1:31:00 *** Those guys are dead. See - they just fall right off. I've never seen anything like that.
Track: Students collect pine needle samples, and the results are measured year to year to measure the state of the forests.
Bite: Christa/UNH XD Disc 1 14:14:50 What's really exciting to me as a scientist is the science that's coming out of this. This just isn't an activity to get kids to think they're doing science 14:15.03:11 they're actually doing it. 14:15.05:04
Track: And some are inspired to make science their life.
Bite: Christa/UNH XD Disc 2 15:16:40 You can see the absorption in the blue. And this is the infrared plateau - and we begin to see absorption due to water content in the leaves….
Track: Danielle Haddad got involved in Forest Watch in Grade 11.
Bite: Christa/UNH XD Disc 2 15:30.20 WHAT DID YOU GET A SENSE THAT YOU WERE DOING? WAS THIS IMPORTANT WORK THAT YOU WERE TAKING SERIOUSLY? 15:30.29:01 That's what I really like about it actually. Cause in class, like in a math or a science class, you do a problem or you do a test and you get a grade on it, but it's not really going anywhere. I really liked this program because I knew that the research I was doing someone was going to use, someone was going to publish. Scientists actually cared.
Track: Danielle is now working on her PhD in environmental science.
Bite: Christa/UNH XD Disc 2 15:32.13 I'd like to be a college professor. I'd like to be able to teach future generations with what is going on in environmental science, why it's important, and how it affects our daily lives, and how this is an important field just as important as the research into cancer biology, or the chemistry. That it's very important.
Soundup: Christa/UNH XD Disc 2 15:14:45 "Looks good." - pan to screen
Track: Though she wasn't even born when Christa McAuliffe was alive, Danielle identifies with her goal.
Bite: Christa/UNH XD Disc 2 15:34.35 What she really wanted to do was get kids interested in science and I think she would be really excited to see what we've done in getting kids interested in science. I know it got me really interested in the field and I'm sure others who did the program got really interested in doing science and going further in environmental sciences.
Bite: Christa/UNH XD Disc 1 14:15.59:16 WHAT'S THE DATA USED FOR? WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE IN A PRACTICAL SENSE TO HAVE THIS KNOWLEDGE? 14:16.04:23 Well we have ended up testifying before congress. The clean air act amendment went into effect in 1990, began to be implemented in `91, `92, and by `95, `96 the health of the pine trees were showing us the impact, the biological impact, which is really important to us as humans, of that clean air act amendment. 14:16.30:21
