Hi, I’m Myron Kandel, president of New Hampshire’s Initiative for Corporate Responsibility and Investor Protection.
I’m here in Salem, New Hampshire, for another program in our series of interviews on our issues -- this one with Senator John McCain of Arizona, candidate for the Republican nomination for President.
Our series is called More than Money, Myron Kandel and the Presidential Candidates. It is predicated on our contention that anyone aspiring to the White House should be able and willing to discuss how to protect the interests of American investors and how to keep our corporations on the straight and narrow issues that are vital for the health of the nation’s economy.
Today, I’m speaking with John McCain, who has served in the U.S. Senate for 20 years and in the House of Representatives for four years before that.
Senator McCain is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy who became a much-decorated naval aviator. He was shot down over Vietnam, was badly wounded and spent five and a half years in a P.O.W. camp.
Back home, after two terms in the House, he won the Senate seat vacated by Barry Goldwater, and has been re-elected three times. In 2000, he unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for President.
In the Senate, he won a reputation as something of a maverick, opposing on occasion leaders and even Presidents of his own party and joining with Democrats to sponsor sometimes controversial legislation.
Senator McCain, thanks for joining me today.
Let me start off by saying that the issues of corporate responsibility, investor protection and business ethics in general are subjects generally ignored on the campaign trail. Why do YOU think they’re important?
